Comments about Happy Years, The (MOD):

I only discovered now what a great child actor
Dean Stockwell was, it is really great now that
all these classic movies are available on DVD--
I just bought "The Boy with the Green Hair" and
" Star in my Crown"---looks like more joyful
    evenings ahead !

Comments about Happy Years, The (MOD):

I saw this movie when it was first released. I was 9 or 10 years old, and I recall that I enjoyed it.

However, watching it again today, I can see its flaws. This coming-of-age story has some nice performances, particularly by Dean Stockwell and Leo G. Carroll, and some very engaging and funny sequences, but the narrative is too episodic and the film's action meanders too much to hold one's complete interest.

Younger audiences might enjoy this more than adults.

BTW: In the baseball scene, that's a very young Robert Wagner behind the catcher's mask.

Comments about Happy Years, The (MOD):

Dean Stockwell is at his mischevious best in this coming-of-age story, and he carries the film quite well. The supporting cast, including Darryl Hickman as "Tough" and Leo G. Carroll as "The Old Roman" provide ample support (the movie parents, featured on the DVD cover, have a limited presence). William Wellman directs with a touch of humor that infuses the film with a sense of fun. The dialouge may go over the heads of younger viewers, but will certainly entertain their parents.

The Technicolor is gorgeous, with only a few blemsihes. The audio is crisp and the scoring fits the film perfectly.
      Great movie.
