Gypsy (MOD BD) Blu-ray

Gypsy Rose Lee became a 1930s burlesque headliner, a long way from vaudeville and out from under her younger sister's shadow. But one force she could never escape was the driving ambition of her mother, who shoved her into spotlight.

Comments about Gypsy (MOD BD) Blu-ray:

"Gypsy" looks great on Blu-ray! Thanks for releasing this classic musical with such a beautiful transfer. Makes a great double bill with "The Music Man". Hope you get around to releasing "Finian's Rainbow" sooner than later (or ever) as that film musical should also look pretty great on Blu-ray.

Comments about Gypsy (MOD BD) Blu-ray:

Of course it's nice to have this title on Blu, and it does indeed look very good. Picture quality of the feature is very nice, sound is clear and clean. though not remarkable - it hasn't been remastered for today's surround systems, but it's fine.

Warner used to be very very good at using the original poster art for DVD packaging and menus up until recently when someone apparently decided to "moderninze" them, as with the recent releases of Singin' In The Rain and "Meet Me in St. Louis" which look blandly generic as a result. This is standard Blu Ray case but the cover art here is a bit more like the good old Warner DVD days.

I'm also happy the disc has a conventional full screen menu instead of the awful trend Warners and other studios have been following where the menu is only a partial screen over a picture (with incredibly tiny type) or no menu at all, (which Fox has ruined a lot of classic movies with) where you have to manually pause the movie and hit a popup button that brings up a bare bones line of navigation prompts in front of the movie itself. This disc has a classic Warner style DVD menu that consists of original poster art without animation. It just quietly waits for you until you're ready - and won't drive you crazy with an annoyingly short repetitive music loop. The menu choices are of good type size (albeit bland) and easy to read.

However the menu art is amazingly fuzzy for an HD disc, there was far better poster art available than this, and there is NO scene selection at all. If you want to go to a particular scene, you're stuck with the forward scan or chapter skip buttons on your remote.

The deleted songs reportedly came from a private print that was loaned from Mr. Malden way back before the first DVD release, which was not mastered in HD. It's apparent that the studio did not recently avail themselves of that print to remaster those songs for HD, however they appear to be presented as well as possible, much better than other Blu discs have handled older supplements.

The included theatrical trailer is fantastic, almost a featurette in itself, very well produced back in the day, and very nicely transferred here, looking as good as the feature itself.

Presentation and authoring could be better, and could be worse. As it is, it's well worth watching.

Comments about Gypsy (MOD BD) Blu-ray:

Finally, GYPSY receives the treatment it deserves!. A flawsless High Definition transfer. The picture and sound could not be any clearer. The trailer in 1080p was a real treat!. The other specuial features as well. We need more Warner musicals to be released in this fashion. I hope FINIAN's RAINBOW is next!!!

Finally, one of Natalie Wood's finest on Blu-ray! By the way, I surely hope I'm not alone when I say that I would like to have "The Great Race" and "Inside Daisy Clover" on Blu-ray as well, because I would!

Comments about Gypsy (MOD BD) Blu-ray:

Didn't know if we'd ever see this terrific, and somewhat underrated and unappreciated musical on Blu-ray, but here's "Gypsy"! Warner has done a spectacular job bring this TECHNIRAMA-filmed production to the world of Hi Def Disc taking full advantage of the format as only Blu-ray can.

Rosalind Russell's performance here as has all the verve and gusto she brought to "Auntie Mame", and Natalie Woood was never more moving, nor ultimately more beautiful than she was here.

This disc is gorgeous and most highly recommended.
