I first saw this movie on my local TV station as a kid. It showed only once, and I never saw it on any other channel, cable or broadcast ever again. Thanks to YouTube, I know this movie was not a fictitious memory, and thanks to the Warner Archive, I have a copy of the actual movie now (YouTube only has the theme song and trailer).
The movie is presented in it's original widescreen format (larger than the usual 16:9 aspect ratio, which was a concern to me since the website only mentioned the product having the widescreen version, but no aspect ratio). The only torrent for this movie was from a 4:3 aspect ratio version apparently broadcast by AMC many years ago, so the product on the website is clearly superior. Unfortunately, I have no 4:3 TVs in my house anymore, so I can't tell if this movie is anamorphic widescreen.
This DVD is really barebones, having just the movie itself and no special features (commentary or even trailers). In fact, the main menu has only one option: Play Movie. While digitally remastered, there are some spots where the movie grain and picture weren't cleaned up too well, but the overall quality of the movie is pretty good. Sound quality is also good, but with no surround sound stereo (although not surprising, given the age of the film).
The movie itself was a joint Japanese-American production made in 1968, and has all the trademarks of Godzilla-era monster movies: men in rubber monster suits, model rockets, and even wire-rigged "flight". This movie is so bad, it's good.

Great transfer. This is a really fun movie. It was made in the 60's with then well known actors. It is a hoot. Nothing serious is going on in this film. The movie was made by a joint Japanese and American production. The movie is a blast and if you like cheesy films that are great on a rainy day this is the ticket.

Comments about Green Slime, The:

You wanna talk about schlock? Frankly, it doesn't get any cheesier than "The Green Slime". And while director Kinji Fukasaku may've served as mentor and inspiration for the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez spurring them into creating their own unique brand of celluloid schlockiness, on many a splendored level, this film would be impossible to emulate even by their impeccably low standards. Still, if you must place "the fickle finger of blame" somewhere, it certainly wouldn't be with Toho Ltd., those wonderful folks that brought you such other fine examples of kaiju (strange creature) cinema as Godzilla and Rodan, but rather with Toei Tokyo Studios in partnership with MGM Distribution. Clearly, an error in aesthetic judgment on Leo's part.

You wanna talk about schlock! They don't come any cheesier than "The Green Slime". And while director Kinji Fukasaku may've mentored the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, inspiring them to create their own unique brand of celluloid schlockiness, "The Green Slime" really has to be seen to be believed, which on many a splendored level, would've been impossible to emulate even by there low standards! But if you must place the "Finger of Blame" somewhere, don't put the blame on Toho Productions. This time round there not responsible but rather Toei Japan Ltd. productions presented by MGM Distribution. Clearly, an error in aesthetic judgment on Leo's part!

A favorite memory from childhood Saturday afternoon tv matinee movies. A fun, not to serious sci-fi movie featuring japanese stuntmen in rubber customers as the green slime. Great cheesy fun!

        Comments about Green Slime, The:

The slime that destroyed a space station. This movie has a kind of campy sci-Fi feel to it. The story is good and for its' time the special effects were average. I especially like the theme song they sang in the beginning of the movie "Green Slime". It's good enough movie to watch with your kids of all ages at least once with popcorn and candy.

            Comments about Green Slime, The:

I love this silly thing. When that Slime comes out attacking people on the space station I am in Sci Fi Cheeze Heaven. If you love silly cheezy 60s space flicks, this needs to be on your video shelf pronto. I've been waiting for this release for years and cried every time I heard that awesome theme song on my Ipod. Now I can bask in all it's loony glory.
The widescreen anamorphic remaster is very clean IMO and looks better than I ever saw it on Saturday Afternoon. Lacks the trailer but I have it elsewhere so I'm good. After this you're ready for Wild Wild Planet or War of the Planets. Keep them coming Warner! Man,do my sides hurt.
