GREEN DOLPHIN STREET was MGM's big, expensive 1947 attempt at another hit on the level of GONE WITH THE WIND. Based on the bestselling novel by Elizabeth Goudge and directed by Victor Saville, it wasn't the critical or popular success they were hoping for. It was originally planned as a vehicle for Katharine Hepburn and Gregory Peck, but they bowed out and were replaced by Lana Turner and newcomer Richard Hart. Turner and Hart are competent but uninspired--you keep waiting for the real stars to arrive--and nowadays the film is chiefly remembered for its main musical theme, which became a hit song ("When I recall the love I found on/I could kiss the ground on/Green Dolphin Street.").

Still, it's fun to watch. Two sisters (Turner and Donna Reed) in 19th century England both love the same handsome but none-too-bright man (Hart). He drunkenly proposes to the wrong sister (Turner) even though he loves the other one (Reed)! Turner sails all the way to New Zealand to marry him, so he has to go through with it, pretending to love her and never telling her (or her sister) about his mistake. If you can swallow that incredible plot point, you'll enjoy everything that follows--earthquake, tidal wave, a Maori uprising, and a spectacular religious conversion (the jilted sister becomes a nun). Donna Reed is terrific, the cinematography is gorgeous, the special effects won an Oscar, and the excellent supporting cast includes Van Heflin, Edmund Gwenn, Gladys Cooper, Frank Morgan and Dame May Whitty. And that music! This is a 141-minute romantic saga, the kind of film they just don't make anymore. Warner Archive's newly remastered DVD-R is a beautiful print with crisp black-and-white picture and sound, and the priceless theatrical trailer is included ("In the magnificent tradition of GONE WITH THE WIND and MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, MGM proudly presents..."). Even without Hepburn and Peck, you can't help but love it.

Nice to have another Lana Turner movie on DVD. This is not one of her best, but still entertaining. Anything with Lana is worth seeing. Now we need A LIFE OF HER OWN; MERRY WIDOW; MARRIAGE IS A PRIVATE AFFAIR; LATIN LOVERS; DIANE and FLAME AND THE FLESH.

      Comments about Green Dolphin Street:

Finally caught up with this title through the Warner Archive. While a long and at times meandering movie, there is ultimately a nice payoff that is spiritual without being in your face about it. The famous action sequences hold up reasonably well. Lana Turner it must be said gives a rather committed performance, her character is more interesting than some she was getting to play around this time. Donna Reed is lovely and pretty much perfectly cast at this point in her career. However acting honors would have to go to Edmund Gwenn and Gladys Cooper as their parents. One long scene shared with Miss Reed, without a visible cut, is very moving to watch. The timeless melody from the musical score is haunting.

      Comments about Green Dolphin Street:

The print is very good with little damage, white spots, some softness and scratches ,and few bad frames.
Also very good contrast, sharp 'image', and quite good black.
The audio track is quite good: only minor issue from time to time.
      Very watchable print.

      HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

        Comments about Green Dolphin Street:

I love 40's films, especially films noir. GREEN DOLPHIN is an exception. I first saw it at age 10 and remembered most of the plot plus the exciting earthquake and tidal wave. WB Archives did an excellent job restoring the film, including the trailer. Delivery of the film was on time and the WB Archive always offers incredibly good sales.

        Comments about Green Dolphin Street:

.................. this screenplay was the winner of a contest MGM had in the mid-forties. the winning script was to be filmed and the studio kept it's promise. not one bell or whistle is missing and the outcome was PURE MELODRAMA AT IT'S FINEST. Lana has more obstacles to overcome than King Kong on his way to & up the Empire State building.

        LOVE IT!!!!!

While the earthquake and tidal wave in the New Zealand outback are obvious effects, Lana and Donna make a beguiling pair of sisters. The drama has a tendency to cross over into soap opera territory.

Delivery was quick and not broken. Disk had no skips, was very clear and well worth the wait to come to disk. I have loved this film since I was young and it has taught me many things.I would suggest it as a must for editing considering the extensive book.

a beautiful production, as typical of MGM at this time period.

an engaging story with lots of unusual twists and mistaken identities.

Lana Turner, Donna Reed and Van Heflin are engaging characters, and there is a magnificent supporting cast as well.

The movie has an earthquake, tidal wave, a life and death struggle up a mountain, religious conversion and other fun scenes which keep the viewer interested.
