    Comments about Gaslight (1944):

I enjoy discovering old black & white movies that may have been forgotten or not as popular as others and I'm glad that I bought GASLIGHT. I've always heard the term and now I know where it came from and why it was used as the title of this film.

The plot is great! Basically the fun starts when a woman with her new husband moves back into her murdered aunt's old mansion. Suddenly she starts hearing strange sounds along with other odd activity like objects disappearing and then reappearing someplace else, and then she starts forgetting things. He thinks she's is losing her mind and soon she begins to think so, too, and starts to unravel. Is it her aunt coming back to haunt her?

GASLIGHT really starts to build the suspense, so the story is riveting, you almost feel like the main character and it keeps you guessing as to whether or not she's really losing it or not, and the sets and costuming are top notch! Although this was a 1944 movie, the time period in the film is during the Victorian Era (about 1837-1900), and as the viewer, you never once feel like you weren't looking at that time period.

Ingrid Bergman is great as "Paula," the fragile wife who starts to unravel, and Charles Boyer as her husband "Gregory" is sinisterly-charming; you never really know if he's good or bad, and a very young Angela Lansbury as their maid also gives a great performance.

Movie quality on the DVD is pretty good though it could use some cleaning up. There are some scenes that are a little foggy, but the contrast is good, which is important to the plot, and noise, dust, scratches, and hair and other debris isn't an issue.

The only special feature is the movie's trailer, which should only be watched after seeing the film because the trailer is a little lame compared to the actual film.

Hopefully one day the movie will be remastered and released on Bluray with extras like the radio broadcast, where Berman and Boyer reprise their roles, and the 1940 version of Gaslight.
