Garden of the Moon

The story is a breezy bit of show-biz romance set at the title nightclub, a chi-chi spot where the owner and the bandleader spar over everything from chewing gum to the club's pretty flack. Of course, the real story is the music.

Comments about Garden of the Moon:

Another fun filled Busby Berkeley musical. Who couldn't love John Payne with a fabulous supporting cast including Johnnie 'Scat' Davis, Jerry Colonna, and Margaret Lindsay. Pat O'Brien was the 'star' of this movie but unfortunately for him the others shone much brighter in this merry romp! This movie contains the not to be missed song, "Lady on the two cent stamp"!!!

Comments about Garden of the Moon:

This was supposed to be a rollicking comedy about a series of deceptions and doublecrosses between the manager of a night club and the leader of the band that plays there. This type of escalating- revenge comedy has always been a staple of the movies (Laurel and Hardy were especially good at it), and this could have been one of the best, given the well-written script. Unfortunately, director Berkeley let O'Brien play the manager too straight, and he comes across as a nasty villain for most of the movie. This throws the film off-kilter and lessens much of the potential comedy. Only at the end, when he concocts his most outrageous deception, is there a twinkle in O'Brien's eye.

Fortunately, the rest of the cast fills in where O'Brien fails. Singer-actor John Payne makes a strong impression in his first leading role (why didn't he ever become a bigger star?). Aiding in the many deceptions are Lindsay as the loyalty-shifting publicist and real-life gossip columnist Jimmie Fidler as himself. Adding extra "comic relief" are Johnnie Davis (remember...he sang "Hooray for Hollywood"?) and wild-eyed Jerry Colonna as goofy members of Payne's Spike Jones-like band.

By 1938, Warner Brothers had given up on big-budget musicals, so there are no production numbers in this movie. Most of the catchy 1930s songs are performed by the band in the nightclub. Still, the Berkeley touch is evident in the way the numbers are filmed and edited ("The Girl Friend of the Whirling Dervish" is a particular delight).

The B&W image is very good, with just a few white speckles here and there. The audio is pleasing to the ear.

Just like Pat O'Brien in these '30s movies. Good music, too.
