    Comments about Funeral in Berlin:

FUNERAL IN BERLIN IS THE SECOND OF THREE SPY FILMS STARRING MICHAEL CAINE IN LEN DEIGHTON'S ANONYMOUS COLD WAR ANTI-HERO (NAMED HARRY PALMER IN THE FILMS) WITH EACH ENTRY RELEASED BY A DIFFERENT STUDIO. IN THIS OUTING, COLD WAR SPY MICHAEL CAINE IS ORDERED BY MI5 CHIEF GUY DOLEMAN TO MANEUVER THE DEFECTION OF KGB MOGUL OSKAR HOMOLKA FROM EAST BERLIN. WEST BERLIN CONTACT PAUL HUBSCHMID IS ASSIGNED TO ASSIST CAINE- AND THE RESULTING 'DEFECTION' CULMINATES WITH SMUGGLING SPECIALIST GUNTER MEISNER BEING THE TERMINATED SUBJECT SHADOWED OUT OF E. BERLIN IN A COFFIN UNDER THE GUISE OF A FUNERAL. TOPICAL IN ITS NARRATIVE AND TOPICALITY BY DIRECTOR GUY HAMILTON (TWO YEARS AFTER GOLDFINGER), CAINE IS CONFRONTED WITH THE INTRIGUES OF HOMOLKA, 'MODEL' EVA RENZI WHO TURNS OUT TO BE AN ISRAELI AGENT, A FORTUNE CONFISCATED FROM THE JEWS BY THE NAZIS AND SECURED IN SWISS BANKS AND THE SECRET WAR-TIME IDENTITY OF HUBSCHMID. THE FILM ENDS ON SOMBER NOTE, WITH CAINE SURVIVING THE SHADED INTERPLAYS WHICH WERE FAR FROM BEING OBVIOUS FROM THE OUTSET. FUNERAL IN BERLIN IS DESERVING OF ITS REPUTATION AS A COLD WAR CLASSIC.
