I have been laughing myself silly at this movie since I first saw it on Christmas Day, 1974.

Funny, violent, loud and much like a traffic accident in that you can't look away. Freebie and the Bean is like a truly tasteless joke; you know it is wrong and yet you laugh so hard.

Two lovably inept cops manage to keep from being suspended while they attempt to protect a local mobster from out of town hit men. Richard Rush's comedy chase film contains the wildest car crashes this side of The Blues Brothers.

With a healthy dose of sexist, racist and scatological humor, you just need to chill out and enjoy the jokes and one liners. James Caan and Alan Arkin assume the usual buddy cop roles and run wild. Relax, it's just a movie made at a time when we weren't so paranoid about poking fun at our differences.

Best scenes? The car chase that ends up on the third floor, the bowling alley shootout in the men's room and the mano a mano (sort of) confrontation in the ladies' room at the Super Bowl.

The banter between Freebie and Bean is priceless, including a terrific exchange where we don't know if they're discussing a wife's infidelity or the dog stools in the yard. Great script by Robert Kaufman (Love at First Bite) and story by the incredible Floyd Mutrux (American Hot Wax, The Hollywood Knights)

Warner Home Video, a company that does listen to movie fans, promised us this DVD release for years, and now they have delivered. If you haven't see this comedy classic in widescreen, you will be impressed!

My Father had mentioned wanting to see this 70's movie again, but could not find a copy of it. I took over the search for him, looking on [...], close out sites, etc., until I had the thought -who made it? Warner Bros. and bingo, they could even make me a copy, how cool is that? My Dad was very impressed and extremely pleased to get this DVD for Father's Day.We watched it together and found the quality wasn't up to par. It appears to have been digitized straight from the original, unrestored and the sound track is quite poor. There picture had moments of mosaic blocks throughout the movie, like you see on digital TV when the signal strength gets weak.[...]Bottom line, if WB would have increased the volume level (saturation) by 50% and slowed down the recording speed, this would have been perfect. The original analog picture was good, but with all the enhancement software available, it could have been a lot better with some TLC.

I was in two minds to buy this film because I was worried about the quality of the product as it is burned on a dvd-r. However I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The artwork was also better than expected. So to anyone out there who has turned their nose up at the Archive Collection because they are on dvd-r I would say " Give them a go , you will not be disappointed. I now own over 100 classic films officially released on dvd-r and nearly 80 of them come from the Warner Brother Archive Collection. Buy with confidence.

I was not a great lover of films on dvd-r but this transfer was very good. The artwork was better than expected. Certainly better than the dvd-r transfers from by mgm.

The transfer widescreen all right looks great!
The print is quite good generally it's a sharp, and solid image with the great audio track also. Still there are lots of white specks, and a few bad frames.
I'm pleased with the disc quality.

                      HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Comments about Freebie & the Bean (MOD):

The DVD quality is fine. The Warner Archive continues to provide older films a really nice face lift. As far as the movie, I was interested due to the cast and the recognition that this was a very early example of the "Buddy-Cop" genre of action films. Although not nearly as polished as the later examples of the genre (see Lethal Weapon, Tango & Cash, Rush Hour, etc.), it has some good action scenes and I enjoyed it for the most part. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the movie about a 6. I rate my appreciation of Warner Archive for making these types of movie available much higher.

I haven't seen this film in quite awhile, and was thrilled to be able to get a copy of it. I grew up watching this cut to ribbons/panned-and-scanned on TV for decades, but I couldn't find it for purchase. A friend told me about its availability at Warner Archive, and I purchased it as soon as I could.

This film is definitely not for everybody, and some of the dialogue and situations wouldn't get made today because of the insulting nature of the exchanges, but it's a good solid buddy cop movie that's hard to beat.

This is on of my FAVORITE (forgotten) films from the 70's and this Warner disc is EXCELLENT! I first saw this film in a Drive-In Movie theater when I was young and absolutely loved it! One of the first buddy cop movies made! I LOVED James Caan in this movie and Alan Arkin was equally as good. The film is not perfect, but really, what film is? Aside from some not so great casting(Valerie Harper comes to mind) and a plot hole or two, this is a FUN ride from beginning to end. The disc looks terrific!

God, if only Warner would release this on Blu-Ray!!
