Comments about Fitzpatrick Traveltalks: V3 (MOD):

Always entertaining, these mostly ten minute "arm chair" travels present us a world that has changed dramatically during this past century. Volume 3 starts with a title initially intended for the previous volumes, OLD NEW ORLEANS (1940), then continues with a 1943 MGM Miniature, MEMORIES OF AUSTRALIA, recycling footage from two earlier 1938 shorts covered in the other sets. The rest on this set were shot between the spring of 1944 (LAND OF THE MAYAS) and the summer of 1952 (although GLIMPSES OF WEST GERMANY wasn't shown in theaters until early 1954). From a pictorial standpoint, the quality isn't quite as spectacular as the 1934-44 titles featured in Volumes 1 and 2 since the James FitzPatrick camera team was "economizing" at this time with smaller film sizes like 16mm blown to 35mm and the image looking grainier. A few early fifties titles are also a bit off in color, but this is likely because of limited print availability. Nonetheless there are plenty of titles here that are just as beautiful as the earlier batches, particularly those filmed in three tours through the United Kingdom (starting in August 1945 when there was plenty of wartime rubble visible around St. Paul's Cathedral in LOOKING AT LONDON) and the South African titles filmed in February and March of 1952 with many breathtaking mountain views. MIGHTY MANHATTAN, NEW YORK'S WONDER CITY is a particularly nostalgic two-reel "special" with lots of interesting visuals (then "new" movies advertised in Times Square like FORT APACHE and Disney's MELODY TIME). A bonus short that is not part of the Traveltalks series is also included: ROME, THE ETERNAL CITY is basically a "soft sell" for the upcoming MGM feature QUO VADIS but features great shots of the modern city that blends in well with others presented here such as the contemporary VISITING ITALY.
