Doc Savage was one of the great heroic characters of the pulp era, second in importance perhaps only to the Shadow, and a major inspiration for Superman. (If you don't believe me, check out Doc's Fortress of Solitude at the North Pole.) He would be a perfect subject for an action flick. Unfortunately, this was made in the early 1970s when Hollywood treated all comic book superheroes like they were the old Batman TV show. That meant camp: stone-face serious actors in the middle of ridiculous situations. On the plus side, in many ways this movie is surprisingly faithful to it's source material and has an excellent pedigree. TV Tarzan Ron Ely makes a solid Doc, in the final production from the legendary fantasy filmmaker George Pal, with Buck Rogers' Princess Ardala, Pamela Hensely along as candy for the eyes. Purists may mourn the missed opportunity but it has such a sense of fun (as the hero and villain duke it out captions display the numerous fighting styles they use, and did I mention the entire film is scored with marching band music?) that you'd have to be a real grouch if you aren't enjoying yourself at least a little. In some happier alternate universe you could probably catch the never-made sequel "Doc Savage, Arch-Nemesis of Evil" on late night TV, probably in a triple feature with "Remo Williams, the Adventure Continues" and "Buckaroo Banzai Against The World Crime League".

If you like high camp, this would be for you. Sadly, this movie was made before Raiders of the Lost Ark which is what a "straight" Doc Savage adventure would have looked like. Ron Ely was well cast as were the rest of Doc's aides but the overblown schmaltz, the preposterous Seven Seas villain and the silly climactic fight scene would have been better left to Adam West's Batman. Still, as the only movie version of Doc Savage available, it's a must have for the completist.

Comments about Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (MOD):

This is high 'camp' like the old Batman TV series. It is more like a comic book version of Doc Savage than it is like the version that I have read in paperback.

The Whole movie and Cast are Terrible in this version of a Doc Savage book or story. The Cast were awful representatives of the books characters. No one really was even close to looking or acting like the books characters. I expected way more than was given...this was an awful movie in every respect !

I saw this movie many years ago on TV and recorded it to VHS. My nephew watched it with me and continued to drop by to see it time and time again. Now, I have purchased DVD copies for both of us. Something he can now share with his children

Comments about Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (MOD):

This is the only screen version of the pulp character. It was done in the 70s with Ron Ely as Doc. Ely was also the 60s tv Tarzan and did a neat job as Doc. If you have never read any of the books you will get all of the fill in you need to get invoved with the fun and characters in the film. I recimmend this to George Pal fans as it was the last film he did. I enjoy it still
