        Comments about Devil's Doorway:

Unusual Western with Robert Taylor cast against type as a Native American Civil War veteran returning home to find his people being driven off their land. Another great Anthony Mann Western, undeservedly lesser known than The Furies or his movies with James Stewart.

            Comments about Devil's Doorway:

An early Western by the great Anthony Mann -- not up to his later efforts in the genre with Jimmy Stewart but an interesting attempt at an adult Western with a socially conscious theme. Its view of Indian culture seems a bit synthetic, but its heart is in the right place. Hardcore Western fans won't be disappointed -- others might want to stick to Mann's later work, like "The Naked Spur".

                Comments about Devil's Doorway:

Extremely interesting western, especially in highlighting the racial issues facing American Indians. Taylor's Civil War hero is well portrayed and his interaction with his own tribe and the townsfolk-friendly or otherwise, is certainly a risk, but, he pulls it off extremely well. Highly recommended.

                Comments about Devil's Doorway:

Before he started his classic series of James Stewart westerns, director Anthony Mann made this film. Robert Taylor is not as charismatic as Stewart and it is a stretch to imagine him as a full blooded Indian.

However, the story was brave for its time and the strengths of Mann's storytelling are in evidence here.

I had only seen this on cable TV before. The DVD-r is much better than my recorded vhs.

                  Comments about Devil's Doorway:

A brilliant film in every way. Fifty years ahead of its time. There are nifty, smart twists on the conventions of the "Western," although this is less in the Western genre and more in the recent "Open Range" genre. The WB Archive transfer is excellent. Fans of the relatively dismissed Robert Taylor should add this to their collection at once, along with "The Tall Target," which director Anthony Mann turned out less than one year later (also available on the Archive).
