Dear Heart

Like a sailor with a girl in every port, Harry Mork has his own list of people, pulchritude and places. But that's changing for this roving salesman with a roving eye. He's found his match: a haughty, worldly-wise widow he plans to marry.

      Comments about Dear Heart:

A great disappointment after a long wait; for some reason this was not made from an original widescreen print but from a 4:3 pan & scan top and bottom cropped to get a "widescreen" aspect ratio. I have a DVD made from the VHS release (with the flawed soundtrack) and verified the above by playing both side by side on portable players. Not surprisingly Warner has not responded to inquiries as to why the original presentation wasn't used.

On the plus side the new DVD shows detail that was lost with the VHS tho it's a bit too bright for my taste.
Also, the soundtrack is ok without the echoing confusion of background sounds on the VHS.

Altogether, i prefer my 4:3 VHS-derived DVD despite the sound problem; there is more of the original picture left and the mellow, relatively soft focus VHS quality seems more "Dear Heart" than the new DVD. ( It had excellent video quality for a VHS.)

        Comments about Dear Heart:

For years, friends and I have been hoping to see "Dear Heart" on DVD and we know that Warner Archives has said they were having problems remastering it.

The problems must have been solved (obviously) because it's here and it looks (and sounds) terrific. After years of having to suffer through the old TV version, we now have a remastered widescreen edition that properly reflects what the director intended.

Glenn Ford and Geraldine Page both give outstanding performances in this touching love story that must have been quite daring in its time.

Highest recommendation for fans of Mr. Ford and Ms. Page (not to mention a wonderful role performed with effortless excellence by the great Angela Lansbury.

          Comments about Dear Heart:

I was happy to see that this is on dvd as it is hard to get. The copy was good except for just about the end when I saw a blotch in the movie. Overall very happy to own it but the quality could have been better. I watch better quality movies on TCM.
