DARK OF THE SUN is one of the best action films I've ever seen, and I've seen most of them. It's exceptionally well crafted and performed, especially by the always dependable Rod Taylor and Jim Brown. The action is fast and furious and the writing is top notch. Warner's DVD is beautiful, preserving the original screen ratio, but sadly it's still missing the infamous violence that was censored many years ago... even though it ran uncut on theater screens in '68! Warner should have dug up the missing bloodletting and reinserted it into their print, or even thrown it on the disc as bonus material, but sadly they didn't bother... however, this is still worth a look as it's most likely the only video print we're likely to ever get. Maybe some day Warner will do the right thing with this movie, but until then I say don't hesitate to grab this truncated - yet still affecting - version up on DVD!

I saw DARK OF THE SUN years ago and was startled by its graphic action sequences. But seeing it again, I was shocked to see that it had been directed by Jack Cardiff, one of England's most accomplished cinematographers, known for crafting some beautifully shot films as THE RED SHOES. But Cardiff didn't shoot DARK OF THE SUN and it shows. The look of the film has a slap dash, hurried look and it never quite comes together.

Comments about Dark of the Sun:

While I love Rod & Yvette and was thrilled to find another movie with them together, this movie was absolutely depraved. Way over the top. I tore the sleeve from the holder and tossed it and the disk in the trash. Really. Man's inhumanity to man is played out in this movie much too graphically for me.

Rod Taylor (who is always good)does a compelling role in this grade B action flic. Jim Brown never was a good actor but he plays his part well and Yvette Mimeaux is sexy. I thought the chain saw scene was done very well

I have been looking for this movie for a long time as it was one I remembered from my early years of watching movies. Even with my over hyped anticipation this movie didn't dissapoint as a good mercenary movie with Rod Taylor leading the way. Not a great all time movie but when you want one of those old time action movies with a sustainable plot on a Saturday night this is a good one to pull out.
