This film earned Bette her first Academy Award. Although at the time considered by some an apology by the Academy for not recognizing her breakthrough turn in "Of Human Bondage" Davis' portrayal of cursed Broadway queen Joyce Heath is electric, bombastic, and deeply shaded. Bette makes the character in turn pitiable, contemptible, admirable, and always unpredictable. It is a performance that, when seen, dispels the notion of this being anything other than an Oscar-worthy effort. Franchot Tone co-stars as architect Don Bellows, and delivers a competent performace. Margaret Lidsay (who would also co-star with Bette in "Jezabel", Davis' second Oscar-winner) and Alison Skipworth make the most of their screen time as Tone's jilted fiance and hard-pressed housekeeper, respectively. The movie is not quite up to par with Bette's tour de force performance, but it is solid and filled with tension, drama, and excitement. "Dangerous" has been out of print for far too long, and WB has finally rectified that injustice and made this important part of an acting icon's legacy available for new generations to discover and enjoy.

Comments about Dangerous (1935):

Unfortunately, Ms Davis doesn't seem to feel comfortable
in this film. The material gives her the opportunity to shine,
but she doesn't seem to catch fire.

    Comments about Dangerous (1935):

The print is quite damaged, really 'average image',black levels were 'good' from time to time, sharp also, however the audio track is quite good. It's uneven in spots, with some softness and scratches!...and a few really bad frames.
    Low but watchable print.
    MOVIE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED DVD WELL...

The film is great, the quality of the transfer however is only okay. It's still watchable, and is only noticeable sometimes. Bette Davis worked to distract me from any of the more minor flaws.

            Comments about Dangerous (1935):

So nice to have a chance and assess what kind of
performance Bette gave in her first Oscar winning
role. Result: just an awkward, shrill and slightly
            entertaining movie. Definitely a consolation
prize for not getting the award for "Of Human
            Bondage" a year (?) ago.

              Comments about Dangerous (1935):

Excellent looking transfer of this important Bette Davis classic! Davis won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in this film, although she readily admitted in later life that the award was a "consolation prize" for not getting the same award a year or two earlier for "Of Human Bondage." I'd have to agree with her. This isn't her best performance, by any means. She's good, and at times better than at others, but there is a lot of overacting here. Still, Bette not at her best is better than most others at their best! It's great to finally have this available on DVD, and the movie as a whole is entertaining.

My wife is a great Bette Davis fan. She watched this movie, which I ordered as soon as I heard about it, and simply loved it! She has wanted this movie on DVD for years and enjoyed it immensely. I should have asked her to fill this out.
