        Comments about Damon and Pythias:

I watch it at home. I have tried hard to get a good color copy of this movie and finally I have it! It's a sword and sandals story with a twist. It's more about brotherly love and it's uplifting. It stars Guy Williams, the one and true Zorro who played that hero in 1957-58 and later was Lost in Space.

          Comments about Damon and Pythias:

I purchased this DVD expecting to see a faithful rendition of the Banim play, which in and of itself was not historically accurate. I was to be sorely disappointed. Not only were the characters revised beyond the play's historical inaccuracies, they were divorced from the entire concept of a lifelong friendship that would engender a sense of personal honor in sacrificing yourself for a beloved friend. If you are looking for anything that displays the classic storyline, this is not the film to see. This film has more in common with other "sword and sandal" films of the era and would need a major re-write to be elevated to "B" status.

          Comments about Damon and Pythias:

Amiable Guy Williams (Disney's Zorro but best remembered as the head of the Robinson family on the old 'Lost in Space' series) portrays the thief from Syracuse who befriends a Pythagorean (Don Burnett) and together their friendship is put to a dramatic test. This ages old Greek tale is best shared with the entire family.

            Comments about Damon and Pythias:

What would you do if you were condemned to death and your best friend offered to stand in your place? Would you offer such for your best friend?Pythias (Don Burnett) is an Athenian condemned to death by Dionysus the Tyrant (Arnoldo Foà) for his "strange" belief that all men are brothers, but he wants to visit his ailing wife one more time before his death sentence is carried out.Damon (Guy Williams), Pythias' best friend, offers to stand in Pythias' place for the duration of Pythias' visit, and to be put to death in his place should his friend not return at the appointed time.Dionysus doesn't believe that Pythias will return and is hesitant to agree to let him go, but he admires the offer and accepts it just to prove his own point.Today's perspectives of morality and honor make this film an interesting study of what true friendship is all about.I received a copy of this DVD for review, and must say - this movie is a treasure not just for the moral of the story but the good sound quality and the rich colors, too.NOTE TO EDUCATORS: This would make an excellent teaching tool.*this review is a partial republication from Classic Cinema Online and is republished for wbshop.com with permission.
