Colleen (MOD)

The merry love-and-money plot involves a wheeler-dealer who convinces a goofy millionaire to back a chic dress shop run by two cuties, much to the chagrin of the millionaire's all-business nephew and all-battle-ax wife.

    Comments about Colleen (MOD):

A rather ordinary musical, save for the finale and fashion show. Ruby Keeler's limited acting really shows here, and is among her lesser efforts. The suual Warners repitore shows up and do their things: Sarcastic Blondell, woo-hooing Hubert, and Dick Powell with a rather dim bulb. worth a viewing.

Audio and visual elements ok; trailer includes some original footage of extras praising the movie.

      Comments about Colleen (MOD):

A wonderful comedy with Dick Powell in the lead! He is at his best in this role as the level-headed nephew of Hugh Herbert, who plays his role with zany zeal! Joan Blondell is delightfully dry and funny as the candy dipper turned shop owner. Ruby Keeler is as cute as ever. Jack Oakie is a cad whom the audience will enjoy disliking, because he is very funny being a cad! Last, but definitly not least, Dick Powell sings beautifully and wonderfully! Though I always think so!

      Comments about Colleen (MOD):

This was an okay movie, typical of mid-30's WB musical comedies (though a bit less ambitious and lower budget than most), with a familiar cast of WB character actors in supporting roles. But don't let the cover image and description fool you. this is not a Joan Blondell movie. It is a Ruby Keeler/ Dick Powell movie. Ruby Keeler is the star and should have top billing. Joan Blondell is not given much to do in this, besides one memorable dance routine with Jack Oakie. Plus, like several of her other movies from the same year (such as 'Stage Struck'), she is playing an exaggerated and mildly unlikeable character rather than being her usual low-key charmingly sarcastic self. If you enjoy Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler and have already seen all their other movies, then I think Colleen is probably worth getting. If you are more of a Joan Blondell fan, I'd save this one for last.

      Comments about Colleen (MOD):

I enjoy the "old" movies, especially musicals. I would very much like to purchase Warner's 1950 or 1951 production " The Daughter of Rosis O' Grady with Gordon MacRae and June Haver. I Also would like to purchase the 1942 MGM film " Kid Glove Killer" with Van Heflin, Marsha Hunt & Lee Bowman.
