How big a MAVERICK fan are you?

Comments about Maverick: The Complete Fifth Season:

I go back to 1957 and the origin of the series, myself. I'm one who worried that Warner was going to wait until the last of us original faithful fans had died off before re-issuing this wonderful stuff.

Now they've released the entire five years, and I'm one happy geezer.

But to Season Five:

It's true, as the purists say, that there was a great Falling Off in script quality following Season Two, when creator Roy Huggins left, and again following Season Three, when James Garner moved on.

By Season Five, the experiment with additional Maverick brothers, cousins, et. al, is done with, and we've got Jack Kelly in 13 new episodes. (ABC ran old Garner episodes on alternate weeks.)

Folks, the story quality is wildly uneven. The worst episodes are farcical rather than witty. But I'll tell you what: The best are as good as MAVERICK did in its five years: "The Art Lovers" (with the great Jack Cassidy), "The Golden Fleecing", "Epitaph for a Gambler" and "Poker Face."

I gave only three a flunking grade as Just Too Much. The rest are somewhere in between, more or less good, depending on taste and the strength of your enjoyment of the whole MAVERICK idea.

Bottom line: I would recommend Season Five to anybody, not just MAVERICK diehards. At its worst, it leaves most of today's TV fare eating dust.

Another set from the Classic Warner Brothers TV westerns. I love these shows and will buy them all. Hopefully Colt 45, Lawman & the Dakotas will be released soon.
