Maverick: The Complete Fourth Season

The fun and card games continue as series' newcomer Roger Moore joins Jack Kelly as Bart's cousin Beau in this rollicking fourth season collection. Comments about Maverick: The Complete Fourth Season:

Two things can be said upfront about Season 4 of this classic series:

          * Roger Moore -- as cousin Beau, from England -- is a very good successor to the departed James Garner (to pair with Jack Kelly on an every-other-week basis)

          * The script-quality problems that crept in the previous year already -- with the departure of series creator Roy Huggins -- are present in spades in Season 4. Long story short, without proper supervision the writers began getting carried away with themselves, creating exaggerated situations that suggest slapstick or farce rather than the true comedy and drama for which the show was known.

The script problem is bad enough that I assigned a D or F grade to fully one-third of the Season 4 shows. On the plus side, half got a B, and three of those a B+, the highest grade awarded by this strict grader (and one who goes back to the origin of the series in 1957).

The B-pluses -- "Substitute Gun," "Last Stop, Oblivion" and "The Bold Fenian Men" -- missed the top grade only by virtue of one of those holes in the plot that just blows things up for me.

Everyone will not grade Season 4 as strictly as I. MAVERICK at its weakest is WAY ahead of any drama available on TV today. I do recommend Season 4 -- with the above reservations -- for its great moments, which are still many.

Comments about Maverick: The Complete Fourth Season:

Jack Kelly & Roger Moore (before Bond) star in this action packed show. It really takes me back to see this classic TV show. I'm looking forward to more Maverick.

Comments about Maverick: The Complete Fourth Season:

While James Garner's Bret Maverick is in only one episode of Season Four of the series, the addition of Roger Moore as Beau Maverick, alongside Jack Kelly's continued great work as Bart Maverick, makes this set a must have for any "Maverick" fan. The scripts are still as crisp and clever as ever, and any fan of Moore's work will be delighted to see him as one of the "Maverick" family. I hope to see Season Five, "The New Maverick," and please, "Bret Maverick," very soon on Warner Archives DVDs.

Comments about Maverick: The Complete Fourth Season:

Once again I must express my gratitude to Warner for releasing one of their extremely well-done TV series from the late 50s -early 60s. MAVERICK was then, and still is now, an enjoyable, extremely entertaining TV series which was marked by superb writing and performances. Rarely did an episode miss its stride. James Garner, Jack Kelly and the rest of the fine players all accredited themselves very well.

I cannot recommend this series highly enough, and if I could express one additional hope it would be for Warners to delight us once again by releasing at last their equally enjoyable series 77 SUNSET STRIP as well.

Again, you will not be disappointed with MAVERICK.
