      Comments about Sinbad the Sailor:

With apologies to the people who seem to like this movie, I thought it was largely a pretentious bore. The trailer tries to sell it as an action-filled swashbuckler, when in reality it consists mostly of people standing around speaking the most overblown dialogue ever written for a movie. I'm sure the script looked great on paper, but coming out of the mouths of actual people (especially these actors), it just sounds absurd. With a running time of nearly two hours and most of it consisting of overwritten babble, this is a tough movie to sit through.

It doesn't help that most of the acting is below par for these fine performers. Worst of all is Fairbanks Jr. who, instead of being manly and rugged, is strangely florid and even effeminate.
There is one long scene where Fairbanks Jr. gets to swash his buckle, but the stunt work is so flaccid, the scene is actually boring. The only other action scene of any note is a brief battle between some toy boats.

All of this is even more frustrating when it turns out the movie has a much better transfer than most of the WAC color movies. Although it never reaches the vivid hues of real Technicolor, the print is clean and sharp with accurate colors. However, the audio is a little below par for a 1940s movie.

Watched on a vintage 42" Trinitron where full screen IS full screen, campy, talky, techicolor fun. Fairbanks hams it up (spoofing Dad no doubt)O'Hara never more beautiful, Sleazak having a great time in a juicy role,Young Quinn adequate as the bad guy. A bid talky (will they EVER get to Dariabar & the treasure?) Yep! Color is beautiful- opening credits worth the price of admission a movie from another time

              Comments about Sinbad the Sailor:

I'd been waiting forever for this movie to be released on DVD. There was a foreign/bootleg version out before, but thanks to Warner Brothers for finally releasing the real deal. This DVD is a great print. It offers an excellent picture that captures the wonderful Technicolor process along with the original aspect ratio. A must for all Fairbanks and Sinbad fans.

                Comments about Sinbad the Sailor:

I've loved this film ever since I was a boy, watching it repeatedly on New York WOR-TV's Million Dollar Movie, in black and white, and missing a half-hour. Ever since, I have tried to find a decent-looking, uncut Technicolor copy. The VHS was... well, VHS. The laser disc was soft and undersaturated. Several imported DVD's were no better.

Well, here it is, at last, looking about as good as a 1942 R.K.O. film can be expected to on DVD, courtesy of Warner Archives.

The film is slow by today's standards, with only a few true "action" sequences, and it hasn't the terrifying creatures that would plague Sinbad in his Ray Harryhausen epics beginning about 16 years later. But it has a grand (some would say grandiose) heroic performance by Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Maureen O'Hara always looks great in Technicolor. The villains are the very entertaining and eccentric Walter Slezak, and...before he really hit the big time...Anthony Quinn.

This MOD transfer is delightful, with beautiful color and nice contrast. Sound quality is good - dialog is clear, and there is a lush, romantic score by Roy Webb. A theatrical trailer is included.

Highly recommended for lovers of classic cinema.

                  Comments about Sinbad the Sailor:

Loved this movie for 65 years, glad to see it available again to all. DVD is very good, sharp, bright colors, to include the 1947 preview trailer (unseen for generations)is an added plus. Sound quality is good, could be a bit brighter on the high end of the frequency scale, but acceptable. If you love this film RUN, do not walk to your friendly video dealer and order it. Colorful entertainment.
