Comments about This Land Is Mine:

The characters in this film show us the full range of reactions to being occupied by the Nazis. We have a saboteur, a collaborator, a child victim of anti-semitic bullying, citizens who are executed as hostages in retaliation for the death of a German soldier, those who encourage resistance with their words, those who encourage collaboration to protect their own interests, and those who try to turn a blind eye to the whole mess.

I have long respected director Jean Renoir for The Rules of the Game and for The Grand Illusion. I would have to rank this film among those for its illumination of being a citizen in an occupied town.

And if his artistry was not astounding enough, keep in mind that Renoir's father, the impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, was a public anti-Semite, a vocal Dreyfusard. (The Impressionists were split on that subject.) From these 3 films, Jean would appear not to sympathize with his father's views.

Charles Laughton's performance is magnificent, as it was in Witness for the Prosecution, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Advise and Consent, The Big Clock, and many others. George Sanders displays a greater range than usual, and Walter Slezak is chilling as the "charming enemy" commander of the region, a precursor to his U-boat captain in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat, released the next year. .

Maureen O'Hara and Una O'Connor contribute masterfully to the portrayals.

Please note that the film was released in 1943, well before the outcome of the war was known.

    Highly recommended.

I have this movie on Laser disc but it has a problem on playback. So I was very happy to get it on DVD.
