    Comments about Red Dust:

This is probably THE Classic Clark Gable and Jean Harlow film and one of their very best collaborations during their brief association in the 1930's. It's not only still an engrossing story, but remains almost the perfect example of the story content that was possible in the Pre-Code Hollywood before strong censorship entered. Harlow plays the part of a "loose woman" or itinerant prostitute with a nonchalance of innocence that endeared her to the movie going world of the 1930's. Gable is at his masculine best as a plantation owner in Southeast Asia. The steamy atmosphere created by MGM's superb production values make the picture as fresh and approachable today as it was in the era of its first release.
This has been a long awaited release of one of the most important Jean Harlow films and remains one of the two or three best of her unfortunately short career. Don't miss it!

I found the picture quality quite acceptable regarding the age of the "film", but it's uneven in spots, with some softness and scratches,a few bad frames and the audio track is that 'good'
Still very watchable print with good contrast, nice and sharp.
              HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

                Comments about Red Dust:

Very impressive early talkie, obviously from a stage play, but very interesting for performance, production, and morality discussions.

At the time, pretty notoriously risque, but now still exciting, even if the production looks antique. The very best of the Gable/Harlow films, and a real curiosity of early thirties at Metro. Daring, one-of-a-kind, for this studio and this year.

                Comments about Red Dust:

Gable always felt director Victor Fleming was the perfect choice to replace George Cukor at the helm of "Gone With The Wind", a real man's man, who understood the insecure Gable better than anyone. Here, Fleming demonstrates that he was also apt when it came to bringing out the feminine wiles in the former sex goddess, Jean Harlow. And put together Gable and Harlow are sexual dynamite in pre-code Hollywood filmaking that has to be seen to be believed.

                Comments about Red Dust:

This adult story of lust in the jungle is just as potent today as it was 80 years ago. Gable and Harlow are marvelous, playing off each other perfectly and generating plenty of heat. Mary Astor's portrayal of the neurotic wife makes me wonder why two men would fight over her, but I'm probably in the minority, because she went on to play other neurotic women and eventually won an Oscar.

The only real sour note in the movie is the blatant racism, as personified by the houseboy played by Willie Fung. These were the prejudices of 1932, but if you can recognize them as such and look past them, then you can enjoy the rest of this terrific film.

I've always thought the laserdisc version of this movie looked pretty good, and I've wondered why it took so long for Warner to release it on DVD. Well, the improvement is noticeable, with a cleaner, more stable image and smoother sound.

Overall, I give this movie a high recommendation, but remember...it's not for kids,

A gem from the 1930s-- and what made the movie a hit back in 1932 still works all these years later. Gable and Harlow are a sexy pair; the directing by Victor Fleming remains among his best work; screenplay by John Mahin is smart and funny. Great night at the movies; and the DVD transfer is terrific. Enjoy.
