Seeing so many so-called "Platinum Editions", it was deplorable that among them, there wasn't any good "Platinum Girl Edition" – until now!!! It was about time to honor Jean Harlow's Work which is now done with a 100th Anniversary Collection. This Collection features seven Harlow Classics formerly difficult to get in good quality: Bombshell (1933), The Girl From Missouri (1934), Reckless, Riff Raff (1935), Suzy (1936), Personal Property, Saratoga (1937). Some of them are rather weak movies, but even in those, Harlow is not only of a radiant and unique beauty, but offers a remarkably elaborated and distinguished performance which is worth watching. In other words, even a bad Harlow movie gives us the opportunity to see Harlow as a real actress and not only as a sex bomb. Every Harlow movie has some magic moments, and the magician is one of the most underrated actresses ever. And at least two movies ("The Girl From Missouri" and "Bombshell") are real Harlow Classics and much more than light comedies. For example, it's de-lightful, it's de-licious, it's de-lovely to watch "The Girl From Missouri" on a big screen, together with a true friend (and Harlow expert), and to discover how lavishly and thoroughly the props are designed in beautiful art deco style. "Riff Raff" is also a good movie, "Saratoga" is odd but offers a wonderful Jean Harlow (and a bad double in the last third, because Harlow died during production). I haven't seen the other three movies so far, but according to Harlow biographers (Bettina Uhlich, Curtis F. Brown), they are somehow mediocre but offer nevertheless a fascinating look at both Jeans beauty and her art of acting. As I have had the same impression of "Saratoga", I assume that this is true. A must-have for every Harlow nerd.

The long awaited Jean Harlow set is here! While I am SO thankful it is finally released poor Jean Harlow deserves much better. Sorry WB! Back in 2006 on the Theatre Forum it was mentioned a Jean Harlow set was coming and it was going to be a "Bombshell"!! So said WB. Two years passed and nothing..Around 2009 it was mentioned again and jump ahead two more years and we get an Archive release. I was really hoping WB would have released the Ultimate Jean Harlow Centennial Collection. This falls pretty flat. No pressed DVD's here and NO restoration. Do not be fooled. Remastered is NOT restored. Bombshell, Reckless and The Girl from Missouri are "remastered"- pretty clear sound and some tweaking to the image - contrast adjustments. There are still tons of film freckles, scrathes etc..Personal Property looks very good, Suzy looks like a VHS tape, Riff Raff looks nice and YIKES!! What happened to Saratoga? It looks like complete garbage worse than an old 15 y/o VHS tape. It is soft and blurry. Not included is Red Dust and Hold Your Man because the prints need work. Truthfully both of those titles looked BETTER then Saratoga when aired on TV. I am still glad to have Jean Harlow on DVD and still happy they finally released something but I really was hoping this gifted actress would have received better treatment. The price of [$] is fair - they certainly arent worth the standard $20.00 price tag.

      Comments about Jean Harlow Collection:

I found that this collection made me so happy! The Jean Harlow films are all outstanding, and there is nothing more better than sitting down and watching these films on a Friday night. Each one of these films are different in thier own way, and there is drama, comedy and romance in all of them! The postcard sized pictures are beautiful as well, and they come neatly packed in the set. For all the Jean Harlow fans (or even just classic Hollywood fans) this set is for you! However, I was a bit disappointed in the quality of this film. Bombshell, Saratoga and Suzy were a bit of a let-down with the whole 'restored version' thing. Overall, it's an amazing collection that you must buy and will keep you entertained for years to come!

      Comments about Jean Harlow Collection:

I love Mickey Rooney and Jean Harlow, thats why I wanted to buy it. But I hate that it has no special features what so ever! Just the trailer! It doesn't even have a scene selection! But, other than that it is a great movie collection for any person who loves old Hollywood!

      Comments about Jean Harlow Collection:

Despite the age of these and the fact that there were no restorations, the titles are perfectly watchable and entertaining. I always have enjoyed Jean Harlow's films, but have always watched them with a bit of melancholia, knowing that her life would be cut short. It's amazing when you realize how many films she would make in such a relatively short period of time.

      Comments about Jean Harlow Collection:

The films themselves are wonderful classics. It's just very disappointing they are DVD-Rs and they have no chapter stops, commentaries, or hardly any supplemental materials. Too bad Warner Archive doesn't offer these films first in a limited pressing of real DVDs with all the extras and then perhaps later release them in the bare bones version they have here. I'm afraid I won't be purchasing many films from here if this is the quality of the presentations.

I would recommend this only if you are a Harlow fan otherwise stay away so you will not be disappointed.

      Comments about Jean Harlow Collection:

With this set most of Jean Harlow's film work is now out on DVD. And yes we get some of her classic performances here. The films look rough but good (I don't mind the scratches as otherwise these films seem to come from good looking source material.)

Still given how long us Harlow fans have waited for this set (as the years have passed by I had given up hope) the exclusion of Red Dust and Hold Your Man are a great disapointment. Red Dust was screened on TMC last year and I saw it looking a little rough but perfectly watchable at Film Forum in NYC during their precode festival. I'd rather have the films as is then to wait forever and never get them released on DVD.

The extras, while nothing to write home about are nice to have including the photo set.

Sometimes, seeing these people is like being with old friends. Especially true of Saratoga. One small problem. On the keep case art work, Benita Hume is credited as Belita Hume for Suzy. WB should be above small mistakes. They usuallly are. Not important, but...

          Comments about Jean Harlow Collection:

Those DVD looked great: Image and Sound are quite good regarding the age of the "film".
This is a very good example of WB Archive remastering program, good contrast, relatively sharp image, and decent black level.
Nevertheless a few or a lot of white specks and some minor issue with the audio track from time to time, especially:"Bombshell", "the girl from Missouri","Reckless",and "Riff Raff". Otherwise GOOD QUALITY TRANSFER HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
"Suzy" there are lots of white specks, a few bad frames, and the audio track is also really damaged.
However average contrast, relatively sharp, and quite good black.Nevertheless the dvd is enough good regarding the age of the "film".
          RECOMMENDED!
At last but not least "Personal property" and "Saratoga" are the best quality from this box set. Those print are very good!
          HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
          Also quite good Special features!
Still waiting for "Red Dust","Hold Your Man"...volume 2 may be!? Soon or later! Soon...

The collection is good, both films and remastering. Better if Saratoga had been treated a little more carefully, but happy to have it. Re Suzy: Credits on the package sloppy. Second female lead, Benita Hume credited as Belita. WB should do better.

I have been a Jean Harlow fan since I was a kid. Suffice to say, I did not hesitate to purchase this collection. I love it! However, I wish that "Red Dust," "Dinner at Eight" and "The China Seas" were part of the collection. I am a movie buff who loves the Golden Age of Hollywood and the Blonde Bombshell is one of my all time favorites. Thanks for giving her a long overdue recognition.
