      Comments about Lost Stooges, The:

Until Warner releases restored versions of The Three Stooges MGM films this is best quality source of many Stooge gags filmed between Soup To Nuts and the classic Columbia shorts. Tastefully narrated by Leonard Maltin, it shows Curly Howard's first film appearance (after Shemp left the group) and Ted Healy's role as the boss of the Stooges. The chemistry is a little different without Moe as the leader but Curly shines as his man-child persona conflicts with Ted's bullying reactions. Now if only Warner could release the Shemp Howard Monogram shorts (please!)

        Comments about Lost Stooges, The:

as in Curly Q. Link! Until Warner makes available the original full length Three Stooges films from their MGM years this is the best available collection of Stooge gags covering the years between "Soup To Nuts" and the classic Columbia shorts. Leonard Maltin's tasteful narration explains these films in the context of the times and only enhances this disc. The only films missing from Warner Archives are the Shemp Howard Monogram shorts (Legalize Shemp!!)

          Comments about Lost Stooges, The:

First, I *love* The Three Stooges! I watched their work from Columbia Pictures on television ever since I was a kid. Over and over.

But the Stooges work at M-G-M with Ted Healy is often mean spirited and very unfunny. Ted Healy is particularly boorish and, as others have written, the Stooges transfer to Columbia was the best thing they ever did, leading to a long and successful career in film.

So this compilation is for the curious and the die hard and not for the average comedy maven. I had a very hard time watching it.

            Comments about Lost Stooges, The:

Rarely seen on TCM, these stooges clips are great with the wonderful Leonard Maltin, the greatest authority today on 30's comedy, giving great commentary on the shorts. This really completes your stooges collection.

We know them from their time at Columbia Pictures but seeing Moe, Larry and Curly at MGM is great! I liked seeing them as they started their film careers. Unfortunately, time has taken too many early movies.

              Comments about Lost Stooges, The:

Interesting to see the early years of The Three Stooges, especially the two-color Technicolor featurette. Smart move by the Stooges to leave Ted Healy. The guy is not funny or personable.

                    Comments about Lost Stooges, The:

This is a fine presentation showing "the best of" the Three Stooges during their MGM days. The image has a lot of contrast, and most of the darks have no detail; the color sections are poor and mostly red, and you will need to reduce the saturation on your screen to be at all comfortable watching it. Most of the images are pretty clear and clean. The sound is satisfactory.

There is a good job of showing most of the Stooges sections from the early shorts they were in, although I would prefer that the selections from any single film be put together consecutively, rather than spread out over the entire documentary. For instance, the editor chose to show all the first third of "Nertsery Rhymes", in which is only the Stooges; then there is a fade out and fade back in, cutting out the dull musical number (no Stooges), and bringing us back to the final third of the film and the ending (all Stooges). Some of the other films are not done this way, so you have to fast forward to get to the rest of the movie from which two or three selections have been taken.

As a documentary, it is pleasant and informative, not too long or verbose, and the narrator does not interrupt the best sequences.

I would still like to see all the MGM Stooges shorts restored and released as complete films (or as complete as they can be found) on one dvd, preferably with indexing so you can skip the non-Stooge sections if you wish. Until then, this will do nicely to fill in some of the blanks of their early film work.
