Anything Irwin Allen has done, I will always watch and enjoy. This movie is fantastic;any other producer would have probably given up in the middle of a project like this, but Irwin Allen lived for these kinds of movies and that's what I like about him. I would recommend this movie for anybody that enjoys science fiction movies.

As a fan of the unique 70's style movie cheese that Irwin Allen was so good at making, I've been hoping that 'City Beneath the Sea' would show up on DVD for quite some time. The image transfer here from the film isn't too bad at all (especially to those of us who have watched the VHS) and the sound is very good, but I have a real issue with the runtime of this DVD.

It's cut by about 5 minutes from the original release, which was 98 minutes according to IMDB. This disc runs 93 minutes, 42 seconds and seems to be missing any of the scenes with legendary boxer Sugar Ray Robinson as Captain Hunter, even though he's still credited, which was one of my main reasons for buying the movie in the first place. It's also a matted widescreen version, so don't get too excited about seeing anything new that wasn't in the full-frame VHS version.

I'm pretty irritated that Warner didn't mention anything about the cuts, I assume some kind of licensing dispute from the Robinson family is behind it but it's still a rather cheap trick to pull on the fans.

A low energy, low budget affair by tv producer Irwin Allen.Dirty dealings in an underwater city. Not to be confused with the Bud Boetticher/Robert Ryan film of the same name.

Comments about City Beneath the Sea (MOD):

A good imaginative movie. As with most Irwin Allen productions, movies and TV shows, the plot
and characterizations were weak, but the special effects were strong. It is definately a keeper cverall. On this DVD version, the picture quality was good. The only drawback on this release as mentioned from a previously con comment is that about five minutes of it is missing from the original broadcast premiere in 1971. The parts I remember missing was when the two children were being schooled by a robot console teacher at home, plus their mother also told them that they could only take one of their teddy bears with her instead of both of them when they had to evacuate the city when the plantoid was on a collision course with it. (The mother was also the one that felt Admiral Mathews was responsible for Bill Holmes death). Why they left out those parts, I'm not sure. Maybe that
part got lost or the rights on them were denied.
I'm hoping someday that can be rectified and will
be released. If so, I'll certainly purchase that
version as well. But for now this present release is way better then nothing. Overall, it's
a must have movie for all sci-fi fans

Comments about City Beneath the Sea (MOD):

This film revived memories past. For its time, it was one of the better SciFi's around. Although the special effects don't come close to today's versions, nonetheless, it has withstood the sands of time. Many of the actors and actresses went on to better and brighter futures. It is a movie that falls within the "Classic" category! By today's standards, the story line was a little rough; however, it was still an entertaining film to watch. It will definitely remain a part of my movie library.

Comments about City Beneath the Sea (MOD):

This is one of the best projects from Irwin Allen. It was better and more realistic than "voyage to the bottom of the sea." It had a strong cast. I just wish it was set on a submarine instead of an underwater city. If it went to series it would have been confining.

Comments about City Beneath the Sea (MOD):

Lots of 70's character actors on display here in hammy TV heroics. Some neat ideas slightly hampered by a TV film budget. Still fun and a good family film that offers clean, Saturday afternoon escapism. One big drawback is the lame cover art. Who designs this junk? Fire them! The cover artwork makes the film look like a cheesy daytime soap opera. How about a shot of Pacifica... or the mini subs... something... ANYthing that at least indicates it's an underwater sci-fi film!?
