Comments about Citizen Kane: Ultimate Collector's Edition (BD) Blu-ray:

That Orson Welles gave a towering Oscar-worthy performance as Charles Foster Kane (whose character was loosely based as a great many already know at least in part on that of William Randolph Hearst) which has passed into film legend as well as the cinema history textbooks, one must regard, as both conciliatory and redoubtable. But in the aftermath of all the sturm und drang over the film's true greatness some 73 years on calls into question the method behind the genius of Welles' masterwork, that is to say, his use of every cinematic trick and innovation in the book available to him at the time, such as miniatures, matte art, travelling mattes, the editors art, such as wipes, dissolves, cross-cutting, etc., and added to that deep focus lenses, on and on, including the kitchen sink, appears a trifle belabored and a little heavy-handed even for CGI-ridden 2014. So while I acknowledge "Citizen Kane's" greatness and the unanimous decision of those who voted it as such (the AFI as well as various and sundry critics circles nationwide), I must confess that I accept it without necessarily or fully understanding it.
