Challenge of the Gobots: The Original Miniseries

    DVD Review by Jeremy Brenes

The Gobots (the international market name for Bandai's Machine Robo franchise in Japan) would become one of the iconic toy lines of the 1980s, rivaled only by the Transformers (Takara / Diaclone in Japan). The original five-part miniseries on this burn-on-demand DVD represents the beginning of the saga, developed by Hanna-Barbera. The following list of episodes is included (with original airdates in parentheses), comprising a single story arc:

    1. The Battle for Gobotron (10/29/84)
    2. Target Earth (10/30/84)
    3. Conquest of Earth (10/31/84)
    4. Earthbound (11/01/84)
    5. The Final Conflict (11/02/84)

While the somewhat complicated history of the Gobots would be revealed in a piecemeal fashion during the course of the subsequent 60-episode series, this miniseries picks up the epic story at the point where the Renegades, led by the evil Cy-Kill, are pushed to the point of defeat by the Guardians, led by Leader-1. In desperation, Cy-Kill escapes Gobotron, the Gobot homeworld, with his closest comrades. Arriving on planet Earth, he has the ambition to use it as a staging point for an mass invasion to conquer Gobotron.

Leader-1 and his closest allies pursue Cy-Kill to earth, where they are forced to befriend certain humans. Among them is astronaut Matt Hunter, whose team has been implicated falsely in the destruction of the space shuttle they piloted in part because of the collusion of NASA consultant Dr. Zebediah Braxis with the renegades. With the help of their troubled newfound human friends, the Guardians must defend both Earth and Gobotron from Renegade tyranny!

The Challenge of the Gobots series features an impressive cast that includes a number of voiceover contemporaries like Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime from Transformers) as Tank, B. J. Ward (Scarlett from G. I. Joe) as Smallfoot, Arthur Burghardt (Destro from G. I. Joe) as Turbo, Phil Hartman (Saturday Night Live), and Frank Welker (who has done voiceovers on what seems like half the animation made over the last 30 years) as Scooter and Zeemon. It also stars SAG Lifetime Achievement Award winner Brock Peters (Joseph Sisko from Star Trek:Deep Space Nine, Admiral Cartwright from Star Trek IV and VI) as General Newcastle, and Grammy and Prism Award winner Rene Auberjonois (Odo from Star Trek:Deep Space Nine, Clayton Endicott III from Benson) as Dr. Zebediah Braxis, both of whom would become semi-regulars throughout the series. This formidable cast was assembled by Andrea Romano, who would later be known for her directing work in numerous DC Universe animation productions like Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited.

This underrated series and its accompanying toy line have had a considerable and largely unacknowledged influence on both the toy industry as well as the science fiction genre in general. Given its historical importance, I look forward to seeing the entire series, as well as the Battle of the Rock Lords movie, released on DVD in the near future.

Comments about Challenge of The Gobots: The Original Miniseries:

It's taken way too long for the Gobots to finally see a DVD release, but at last they are here. The series is often maligned as a "poor man's Transformers," usually by those who haven't seen it or have a nostalgia-tinged bias toward the Robots in Disguise. In actuality, Challenge of the Gobots is an entertaining 1980s television series with a lot to like and plenty of rewatch value.

The setup is probably familiar-- two warring groups of robots find their way to Earth and fight over the fate of its resources and native inhabitants-- but Gobots is unique in many ways. It focuses more narrowly on a core cast of six robot characters-- three heroic Guardians and three evil Renegades-- along with a few human characters. This gives more time for the small cast to be developed. I particularly like Scooter, the sheepish Guardian who must summon the courage to be a hero when the occasion requires.

Another noticeable thing about the Gobots is the diversity of the cast, both human and robot. There are more regular human cast members in the series, for starters, including two prominent African-American characters. The Gobots themselves have several female robots among their ranks, the most memorable of course being the diabolical Crasher. She steals almost every scene she is in with her insane antics and cackling laughter. These female Gobots aren't treated any differently-- they're not given pink and pastel character designs and they don't play second fiddle to their male comrades.

I understand that Gobots didn't get a lavish DVD treatment since it isn't a high-demand series-- just having the ability to watch the episodes is great. I do wish that even one or two special features had been included, like a gallery of production stills or pre-production artwork. But the series itself is quite enjoyable, with solid 1980s animation and fun characters. Gobots really deserves more recognition than it gets.

Comments about Challenge of The Gobots: The Original Miniseries:

Gobots has always been one of my favorite cartoons and I honestly thought it would never be released. So glad that they decided to release it even though it's just the mini-series. If the Gobot "haters" so to speak watched the show and gave it a chance, they might notice just how good it is. It has always been underrated because of the Transformers comparison and I think that's unfair. It had great characters, storylines, drama, action, humor, etc... just like most other 80s cartoons.
I actually hope they at least release the Gobotron Saga as well, which was 10x better than the original story and to this day I still enjoy watching it on the old copy I have.

Comments about Challenge of The Gobots: The Original Miniseries:

I love the G0-Bots. I am an avid transformer fan and I still love the Go-Bots! This is a MUST BUY for two reasons. 1. it how it all started and it brings back memories. 2. I want a complete series release and if the mini series fails that wont happen. WB did a good job of restoring except for episode 4 several times you can tell its a aged cartoon. Its is only in fragments not the whole episode but it was bad quality. I bought 2 copies, its the same on both. am I sorry no, I will give one to my nephu. I am not sure if episode 4 was just impossible to save but its noticeable. thats why 4 starts instead of 5. I still think this cartoon rocks and I hope to see more of the series.

Comments about Challenge of The Gobots: The Original Miniseries:

Always in the shadow of the hugely popular Transformers, I was surprised when I picked up this DVD at how gorgeous the animation of Gobots was. Of course, as with animation of the period, the action was downgraded, characters simply composed and presented, and plots thin, Gobots could have been a hugely popular product had it not premiered roughly around the same time as Transformers, which had only slightly better animation (likewise with character development and plots).
