Comments about Cain And Mabel (MOD):

Clark Gable must have felt like he was being exiled to a desert island. His is the only character that saves this movie . . . its so bad you don't want to miss a minute. I, for the life of me, do not see what people see in Marion Davies. She is unattractive, untalented, and she simply cannot act. Maybe she was funny in silent films but she is really terrible as a sound actress. The musical numbers are interesting but not up to Warner standards for the time period, although I read that they cost a fortune. I just do get it.

Comments about Cain And Mabel (MOD):

Some musical numbers in this movie are very elaborately staged, and beautiful to watch. That said, the songs here have not aged well, and I found myself looking at the clock during most of them.

As far as the comedy goes, the dialog is sharp, but it is not quick. Timing is everything in verbal sparring, and the irregular pauses in this movie's banter almost kill the jokes. For a how-to of great verbal sparring, watch "His Girl Friday" or "My Man Godfrey" from the same year.

I actually enjoyed this movie quite a bit: Gable especially owns every scene he's in. I think perhaps my expectations were too high.

Comments about Cain And Mabel (MOD):

It's a musical, but Marion Davies was no Judy Garland or Eleanor Powell--i.e., she's competent, and lovely, but there's nothing ASTONISHING about her talent. But there's not a dull moment, and if you love Screwball Comedies with "snappy dialogue," that's this picture's greatest strength. There's hardly a line spoken that isn't a wisecrack. I've loved this movie for 40 years--since I saw it as a kid. Gable is Gable, Ruth Donnelly is Ruth Donnelly, Roscoe Karns is Roscoe Karns. All wonderful.
