Blessed Event

Lee Tracy portrays raspy Alvin Roberts, whose zest for unearthing short marriage-to-maternity spans among Broadway's notables lifts him from lowly clerk to tabloid king.

      Comments about Blessed Event:

If you have ever seen Burt Lancaster in "Sweet Smell of Success," in which he plays a thinly masked version of Walter Winchell at his ugliest, you need to see "Blessed Event," which is the same idea but comedic. Lee Tracy plays the role of a gossip columnist who, using the phrase "blessed event," strikes terror in the hearts of the upper class as well as well known characters of the lower classes. Tracy, one of the fastest talking actors of all time, propels this picture at 100 mph with wit hilarity, and a hard-learned lesson before a great ending. The supporting players are superb, and the screenplay is tight and effective. This pre-code film could not be reissued after 1934 because it defied editing. I recommend it.

      rat-a-tat-tat

      Comments about Blessed Event:

This is a great movie. Too bad it took Warner Archive 7 weeks to get me a good copy. The first one I received was defective, and customer service on a defective exchange is very slow and uncommunicative. Back to the movie: This may be Lee Tracy's best role. He talks like a machine gun. He barely stops to take a breath, and the whole film is one of those Nascar-paced B-movie dramedies that WB excelled at in the 1930's.

I wish this fantastic film was given a more legit DVD release, but thanks to Warners for releasing it on DVD at all I guess. The Front Page and Five Star Final and all the rest are excellent, but this is the best newspaper pre-code of them all, because it stars Lee Tracy. I won't go into the plot but if you like your wisecracks fast and your newspapermen nasty, you'll be more than pleased.

A fast paced newspaper movie with the great Lee Tracy as a sleazey tabloid columnist.
No one ever played these type of parts better than Lee Tracy,if you like him in this try Bombshell with Harlow and Lee Tracy!

                Comments about Blessed Event:

This is one of the classics that defines how daring films started to become before Hollywood's production code clamped down on creativity. I first became fascinated by pre-code movies in the late '80s when they started to surface on VHS and then later on laserdisc. Fans of these films have waited a long time for BLESSED EVENT, and this new DVD from Warner is aptly titled, since it was truly worth the wait. The picture is much clearer than I have ever seen it, and you can finally understand every bit of dialogue...and in a movie like this where the script has characters talking as fast as lightning, that's of vital importance. I'm so happy to finally have this great flick on DVD, and can highly recommend it to die-hard pre-code movie fans as well as to those who are among the uninitiated!

                  Comments about Blessed Event:

This flick is a knockout. So glad to finally have "Blessed Event" on a crisp, new DVD. Lee Tracy's performance is astounding, and the fast-paced wit of this film makes it essential for anyone who loves the kind of saucy and fun flicks that Warner Brothers made before the onslaught of the production code. Thanks to the Warner people for giving us yet another one of their very best gems.
