'Ladies and gentlemen! Children of all ages!" Yes, this is a bit of a "poor man's Greatest Show on Earth" but it's a fun viewing, thanks to a solid cast. Showman, Victor Mature. Ringmaster (and saboteur?) Vincent Price. Clown, Peter Lorre. Bank watchdog, Red Buttons. Aerialist Gilbert Roland and love interests Rhonda Flemmming and Kathryn Grant (Mrs. Bing Crosby #2). Note that Mr. Roland at this time is 54 Years old! Check out his very interesting profile on Wiki or Imdb. I have to admit to a soft spot for Circus movies as the Circus is how 2 of my grandparents wound up in this country, performing in a Cossack Riding Troupe with Ringling Bros. and other Circuses in the early part of the 20th century. My one complaint with the film, and WB archives have no control over this, is that time it was made, the producers didn't bother to identify in the credits the circus performers who appeared other than with the blanket statement "The World's Greatest Circus Acts". As a kid I can remember seeing the film's "human cannonball", Hugo Zacchini (sp), blasted across the length of the old International Amphitheatre in Chiacgo for Ringling Bros. I found the DVD quality to be just fine so I recommend you sit back and enjoy the show!

This is colorful entertainment produced by Irwin Allen, who seemed to specialize in this kind of family entertainment back in the 50's and 60's. This one features a really outstanding cast, and capitalizes on the CinemaScope screen to capture all the dazzling colors of the Big Top. Childish, nostalgic fun - as it should be. Sadly, the stereo track is out of phase, which means Dolby Pro-Logic systems will reproduce the dialogue tracks from all speakers (including surrounds) simultaneously. Requires soundtrack correction.

Terrific Movie; Audio Is Still Defective

By Bill

Comments about Big Circus (MOD):

I have always liked this movie, and I had hoped that WAC would have remastered the defective audio after all the complaints in the early reviews---but no such luck. On my surround system, all of the mono audio comes out of the rear speakers. On other systems, other problems occur, as described in the previous reviews. Why hasn't WAC fixed this problem?

As far as the movie itself, it is very entertaining, though derivative of a certain Oscar-winning movie from a few years earlier (there's even a train wreck, but off-screen). My only real complaint is that a late revelation about one of the characters strains credibility. Otherwise, the performances are all excellent, the CinemaScope image is clear and colorful, and the audio, though misplaced, is clear and crisp.

Comments about Big Circus (MOD):

The transfer widescreen all right looked a little faded.
The print is quite good generally it's a sharp, and solid image however there are lots of white specks, and a few bad frames. The audio track seems to me clean and clear.
RECOMMENDED!

    Comments about Big Circus (MOD):

On the first day of the year I watched one of the four Warner Archives DVDs that I had recently purchased. Thus, my first film of the year was "The Big Circus" (1959), which I had not seen in perhaps 45 years. And despite the fact that I had forgotten about many scenes, I found that I STILL had large chunks fairly well memorized, down to the dialogue! It was so great to see this one again, lemme tell you! Just to see Gilbert Roland as Zach Colino walk across Niagara Falls...I never thought I'd get to watch that again! And the effects in this scene were surprisingly decent, too! This is the first time that I have ever seen the film in color (back in the early '60s, all we had in my house was a B&W set) and in wide screen. What a wonderful experience it must have been, to see this in a theatre back when. The color in the film is pretty spectacular, too; I can't believe that I was satisfied with a B&W image while growing up! What a cast in this picture, too: Victor Mature, Rhonda Fleming, Red Buttons, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Steve Allen, etc. This film really got the New Year off to a wonderful start for yours truly! My only beef: The sound on this DVD was extremely low. I had to turn the sound on my TV allllllllllll the way up to make it optimal. My other three WA acquisitions, I might add, were absolutely perfect in this regard....

    Wholesome 1950s Entertainment

      Comments about Big Circus (MOD):

While watching this fiim, I imagined the 1950's American family: mother, father and the kiddies all going to see this wholesome entertainment and each enjoying it for their own reasons.
Produced by Irwin Allen, the legendary "Master of Disaster," this film is sort of a cheaper version of "The Greatest Show on Earth." However the circus scenes are still lavish, the costumes colorful and some of the real circus acts quite impressive. The plot concerns circus owner Victor Mature trying to keep his circus afloat despite various adversities, including an unknown saboteur.
The cast includes various stars of the '50s including Mature, the beautiful Rhonda Fleming, Red Buttons, the great Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Gilbert Roland, etc.
In conclusion, this is a marvelous entertainment for the 1950s family and many 21st. Century families as well, I recommend it.

        Comments about Big Circus (MOD):

Hands down, one of the best circus films ever made. Only CC DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth is better than this circus film. This has the most important aspects, Great Story, Great Cinematography, and A Great Cast. May have limited appeal since this is circus film, but I still Highly Recommend this movie.

This movie came out in 1959 and I was 9 at the time. To promote this film at the local drive in....someone created a REAL circus parade full of floats that went around the circumference of the drive-in. I rode one of those floats so I have GREAT memories of that movie when "The Big Circus" came to Toledo, Ohio

Great film. One of the hard to find Vincent Price films. The film was well shot and has a great story. Price is not one of the main charactors, However it keeps you wanting more and gives you just enough to suspect he is behind the plot.

The sound quality was so poor that we had to triple the volume to hear it and it was still difficult to understand. There seemed to be an annoying background noise that affected the sound quality. I don't know if this was our disc or if it is the same on all discs.
