    Comments about Berlin Express (MOD):

This film is marketed as a thriller set on a train, which it is-- for about 5 minutes. The rest of the film is a painfully dull and preachy story about the difficulty of allied cooperation in Berlin after the end of WWII. There is some documentary interest in seeing the bombed-out rubble of Berlin, as this was the first film made on location there after the end of the war. But if you are seeking any kind of entertainment (and thrills especially), this is not for you. Really a dreadful film!

      Comments about Berlin Express (MOD):

I bought this one because of the price and Robert Ryan's presence. I got far more than I bargained for. Set between the end of World War II and the German reformation, director Jaques Tourneur actually filmed this in post-Nazi Germany. So this is a period of history we rarely get to see. The story is filled with interesting twists and the romance between Ryan and Merle Oberon is quite believable as is the action. The supporting players acquit themselves admirably and add to the movie's themes of co-operation. Superb.

          Comments about Berlin Express (MOD):

I've been catching up with some of the lesser-known films of Jacques Tourneur, and WB has several of them, to my delight. BERLIN EXPRESS has the crisp and visually inventive work usually associated with Tourneur. The film is taut and compelling despite being set almost entirely in interiors. The "message" about international understanding will strike the contemporary viewer as a bit naive and pat, but Tourneur handles it with grace and invention, so that it never seems corny or mawkish. This one's a keeper.

            Comments about Berlin Express (MOD):

Yes, the movie is entertaining and it was good to see Merle Oberon, but the movie also harkens back to some of the realities of Post WWII and has historical value in the actual settings and concerns of the period.

I use an HD projector and large screen and found the picture quality quite acceptable for a non-remastered film.

Nice post-war thriller--like a lighter version of the Third Man combined with the Narrow Margin and The Tall Target.
