This is a terrific piece of film-making from Warner Brothers in the heart of World War 2, and a welcome rendition of a book by the almost forgotten author, Eric Ambler. Although George Raft is the star, and he acquits himself well, the movie truly belongs to Sidney Greenstreet as a Nazi playing everyone to his own ends. Every scene he's in is dominated by his presence, and every scene he's not in is affected by his style and power. In addition to being a part of the (on DVD, at least) ill-represented Raoul Walsh's filmography, this film also features editing work from Don Siegel who would go on to direct DIRTY HARRY and ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ. The DVD from the Warner Archive looked great and is a welcome example of the ability of their remastering program. Worth the time and effort.

    Comments about Background to Danger:

The DVD disc itself was fine. There were no extras, just the film, and (I believe) a trailer.
The film reminded me of other better films, probably because Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet were headliners in the cast.

            Comments about Background to Danger:

I was amazed by this dvd! The image is sharp, excellent contrast, and the sound is clear.WB Archive has done well with this good
            "anti Nazi/war propaganda Movie".
My only hope similarly great transfers in the near future.
Great Cast: George Raft, Sydney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre in this typical story especially at that period of time directed by Raoul Walsh one of the best director from WB ...at that time.
            Enjoy the movie!
