I have loved this film ever since I saw it as a kid, and now, as an adult, I still cherish it. Considered by critics to be one of George Pal's lesser efforts, I totally disagree. It's got everything - noble hero, villianous scientists and cruel rulers, man/beasts, the "Trial of Fire and Water", giant crystal death ray, exploding volcano and more - the ulitmate Saturday afternoon matinee! With great special effects and a teriffic score by Rusell Garcia, and a beautiful widescreen transfer, this is a totally entertaining film for the whole family!

It was great to see a childhood favorite in Widescreen at last. The picture and sound will satisfy most people, the best on the market today in my opinion. The best things about this movie are the destruction of Atlantis, Ed Platt as a High Priest, the death crystal, the costumes and evil John Dall. However, the acting is HORRIFIC and laughable. Some of the worst. I would recommend this movie for nostalgia buffs only.

Comments about Atlantis, The Lost Continent:

Despite the rather dodgy visual effects and the fact that producer/director George Pal obviously had to plunder the MGM warehouses of retired sets, props, costumes and stock footage, (I could swear I've seen the costumes that the Atlantean soldiers are wearing also worn by the cast of the technicolor musical "Kismet"), the film is nevertheless an amusing diversion and one you can share with the entire family whether you believe Atlantis ever existed or not.

Comments about Atlantis, The Lost Continent:

Villains John Dall and Berry Kroeger are so hissable here that they might as well be called "The Queens of Atlantis." This MOD DVD-R is the best print of the film I've seen since the original theatrical release. It is letterboxed (unlike previous VHS, laserdisc, and TV prints), so you can actually see a man fall to his death at the edge of the frame. The movie is a fun mythological fantasy piece, and it does seem like a Harryhausen film without the monsters. There is a subplot about people being made into animals which is reminiscent of ISLAND OF LOST SOULS.

Comments about Atlantis, The Lost Continent:

George Pal, director of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, TOM THUMB, THE 7 FACES OF DR. LAO and others, strikes gold again with this movie. Each moment is riveting action at its best. The cast is brilliant...including John Dall as the villain. His greatest film since THE CORN IS GREEN in 1945.

Comments about Atlantis, The Lost Continent:

This was a great movie in its day. I first saw this film at a local theater on a "two-fer" weekend matinee as a youth.Later I caught it as a late night "Chiller Theater" feature. I enjoyed seeing the film again, but surprised myself on how the film had aged and how cheap the effects look today. My son, 18 years old laughed at most of it, giving his own version of a "Mystery Theater 3000" treatment for most of the film. I still like the film, but more for the nostalgia it bring with it.Excellect copy, best this film has ever looked!

Comments about Atlantis, The Lost Continent:

I purchased this movie mainly because I remember seeing it when I was around 7 years old and I thought the sfx were really great. It's a fun flick if you are willing to watch it without a real critical eye, just a fun saturday afternoon kiddee matinee thing. Something to temporarily take you back to the late fifties/early sixties groupings of stuff like "Jack the Giant Killer", "Jason and the Argonauts", "The Raven", etc.
Obviously low budget flicks, but when you're on summer vacation and still early elementary school age, you didn't care about such trivialities.
I would recommend it to a friend only if I knew they were into this style of dated "B" grade fantasy type movie.
