This terrific Jane Powell musical is a pure delight, wonderfully remastered and presented for the first time in anamorphic widescreen and stereophonic sound. It's also great that outtakes survived and are provided as special features. This gimmicky, health-nut musical was produced by the 2nd-tier, Pasternak unit at MGM, although it was originally intended for the prestige Freed unit as an Elizabeth Taylor vehicle. Originally planned to capitalize on the recently-introduced CinemaScope process, MGM changed its mind and released the film in standard Academy ratios (1:37 or 1:85 to 1, dependant on the exhibitor's theater screen); the musical numbers, however, utilized CinemaScope's requisite stereophonic sound when recorded, and this superb soundtrack can now be heard on this new archive edition. Martin and Blane's songs are wonderful, real gems in a film that only became a minor pleasantry in the MGM canon, although it is a movie with a bit of a cult following these days, mainly because of an early, featured appearance by famed bodybuilder Steve Reeves. This overdue version of ATHENA was worth waiting for, thanks to this splendid Warner Archive remaster.

Athena was one of MGM's least successful musicals, released on top of the widely acclaimed Seven Brides. Jane Powell & Debbie Reynolds fared much better in the earlier Two Weeks with Love & the later Hit the Deck. Here they have a weak storyline, so-so songs and wooden leading men. Vic Damone is ok, but Edmund Purdom lacks the warmth and spontaneity of The Student Prince. The film received neighbourhood theatres release, and has been largely forgotten. Thanks to Warner Archive we have an original widescreen remaster (not Cinemascope) that not only looks beautiful; the stereophonic sound is processed with the dialogue in the centre speaker, and music in the front and rear surrounds; possibly 5.1? If you are an MGM musical collector, you have to buy this if only for the sound quality - if you have a home theatre set up. The film does have small pleasures.

    Comments about Athena:

Cute movie. Odd mix of muses (in name anyway) music and musclemen. Interesting that this is the movie that led to Steve Reeves having a career, and that Debbie Reynolds isn't the main girl. The quality of the transfer is nice, and its widescreen, which is a big plus. Just above average because of its odd "health" theme. Production numbers are nothing amazing, just sort of adequate.

    Comments about Athena:

Good print of Cinemascope aspect, which is important in a film which features a lot of dancing. While not up to the level of the roughly contemporaneous "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" which also starred Jane Powell, "Athena" shows that the MGM studio machine was still capable of producing entertaining, well crafted musicals even as public taste had moved on. It's good to have decent prints of these films to fill out our library of certified classics. Makes me appreciate the classics even more, understanding the context in which they were produced.

It was a dated liberal "go green" type of story that overshadowd the whole picture. Ok if you like that sort of "preachy" element.

      Comments about Athena:

So happy to finally get this on DVD. Nice remastering job. Picture is what you would expect from Eastman color. Picture is fine, but more problematic in the opticals (dissolves, etc.). Most notable is the new stereo soundtrack which is full and dynamic.

      Highly reccommended.

It has a great cast with great personalities enjoying what they do best, acting and singing and you will find yourself smiling while you watch this wonderful classic that just came out and remastered. Great quality film and great music. Don't miss this one.

Unusual off-beat musical treat, snappy tunes, good cast, and very good audio, considering the age of this film.

Interesting & unusual idea for the storyline...Mr. Universe, vegetarians, numerology & astronomy and young love rolled into one musical. We found it, the actors & the songs very enjoyable. Nice dvd quality with beautiful technicolor. Nothing better than a technicolor musical!
