Comments about Alphabet Murders, The (1966) (MOD):

BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION, TONY RANDALL'S INTERPRETATION OF AGATHA CHRISTIE'S HERCULE POIROT IS FAR REMOVED FROM THE LIKES OF DAVID SUCHET, PETER USTINOV OR ALBERT FINNEY (OR THE LIKE). WITH THAT ACKNOWLEDGED, THIS 1966 MGM FILM VERSION (OF DAME AGATHA'S THE ABC MURDERS, 1936) IS OUTLANDISH FROM THE FIRST SCENE, AND WILL APPEAL MORE TO FANS OF THE LATE TONY RANDALL THAN DAME AGATHA, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAVE FOLLOWED DAVID SUCHET ON PBS SINCE 1989. HEROINE ANITA EKBERG MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A SUCCESSION OF MURDERS IN LONDON, AND POIROT IS CALLED TO INVESTIGATE. CHRISTIE CREATIONS CAPTAIN HASTINGS AND INSPECTOR JAPP ARE CHARACTERIZED IN THE PERSONAS OF ROBERT MORLEY AND MAURICE DENHAM AND DIRECTOR FRANK TASHLIN MAINTAINS A FRENTIC PACE. AS SCRIPTED, ALPHABET IS CLEARLY HIS CUP OF DIRECTORIAL TEA, GIVEN SIMILAR EXCURSIONS WITH THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT AND CAPRICE DURING THE SAME ERA. THE FILM BOASTS SOME IMPRESSIVE BRITISH TALENT IN THE FORM OF MORLEY, DENHAM, SHEILA ALLEN, JAMES VILLIERS, JULIAN GLOVER AND SEVERAL OTHERS. THE MYSTERY IS ULTIMATELY SOLVED BY POIROT IN TRUE COMIC FORM. LENSED IN B/W, THIS 90 MINUTE FEATURE OFFERS AN INSPIRED LOOK AT 1965 MOD-LONDON, AND FOLLOWS THE STYLE OF THE FOUR PREVIOUS MISS MARPLE FILMS STARRING MARGARET RUTHERFORD (WHO HAS A CAMEO) AND THE 1965 VERSION OF TEN LITTLE INDIANS.
