Advance to the Rear

In the war between the blue and the gray, one soldier is yellow! When a cranky Union colonel is labeled a coward after his horse bolts for the rear, the brass puts him in command of a company of the brainless and brawnless and sends them all West.

Comments about Advance to the Rear:

I saw this movie as a teen and thought it was hilarious - had to buy it - and it is just as funny now as then!
This is the only movie I know written as a comedy about the Civil War. Oddly enough, the beautiful song "Today" came from this movie.

Comments about Advance to the Rear:

I managed to miss this film on its first go-round in 1964 and knew it only as the source of the New Christie Minstrels' beautiful ballad "Today". Unfortunately that song gets minimal exposure in the film. The script is lame and cannot seem to decide what kind of story it wants to tell, alternating between slapstick, character humor, and semi-serious drama, with no sense of pacing. The actors (all more than competent) manage to be professional enough to hide their embarrassment at the general mess. With a better script and direction, this could have been an enjoyable comedy. Too bad MGM wasted its resources on a piece they didn't take seriously enough to give it color (it's in black and white, which is odd for the mid sixties) or decent editing The remastering seems good enough, though why bother when the film itself is such a mess?

If you like Randy Sparks & the New Christy Minstrels, you will love this movie. It has my all time favorite song "Today" and a heap of other good music. And Glenn Ford is very loveable in this movie!

Comments about Advance to the Rear:

It's a quasi-bedroom farce and the inspiration for the TV series F Troop. It's better than F Troop and has a good soundtrack that includes boings and zings in it. The song "Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine" is from this film. Glenn Ford and Stella Stevens are great. Jim Backus and Joan Blondel are in supporting roles. "Skipper" Alan Hale Jr in pre-Gilligan days is also a pleasant surprise.

Bought this for someone else and had to have one myself. While it may be a little predictable, it is just laugh-out-loud funny.
