First off, Saturday Morning adaptations of TV Sitcoms were rather unusual in the 70s. Such is the case of the original 'Addams Family' Cartoon.

When I first saw the program back in 1973, I overlooked some of the flaws, like Lenny Wenrib performing Gomez's voice instead of John Astin, because I had never viewed the actual sitcom until much later. Although Ted Cassidy and Jackie Coogan do reprise their roles as Lurch and Uncle Fester. Amazingly, Janet Waldo (Judy Jetson) does a great version of Morticia and Grand Ma-Ma (ironically, she'd later reprise her Morticia role in the updated Addams cartoon decades later).

Anyway, onto the original series itself: here the Addamses are travelling cross-country in their haunted camper (resembling their spooky mansion). The characters are designed from Charles Addamses strips, and act pretty much like their sitcom versions.

One of my favorite episodes is "Follow that Loaf of Bread" where the Addamses must race the clock in order to get Morticia's 'Eerie Egg Bread' entered for a baking contest in Chicago.

As I said before, the only one flaw in the series is Gomez because he comes off more like a Jackie Gleason-character, than the classic version Astin made him to be (probably why H-B later used him for Gomez in the updated version). Other than that, the series isn't too bad.

I was really happy to get the 1973 Addams Family series on dvd. I wish they included some extras about making the show and or some behind the scenes material. I remeber watching this show as a kid and even though the animation is not up to par with what we watch today ,it still has that little charm that still makes this a underground classic.

Comments about Addams Family, The (ANIMATED) (DVD):

1973 was a lame year for alot of cartoons. I gave 3 stars because the plot was wore out at that time, as the original Addams Family was already in syndication for a couple years. Hard to keep my attention at some points of the shows. It is still a classic and will be watched , but not as much as some others I have purchased.

Thank you AGAIN WB Archive for making this elusive series available on DVD. Another gem from my childhood that I am so glad to have the opportunity to own. The episodes (that I've viewed so far) look great. And now I see content-specific illustration has been added to the menu screen (nice!). I hope everyone buys this and the other Hanna Barbera releases, so the new releases will keep coming!

        Great show finally on DVD

Comments about Addams Family, The (ANIMATED) (DVD):

The animated version of The Addam's Family from 1973 was a worthy-successor to the live-action series. Their first cartoon appearance was on The New Scooby Doo Movies (which was basically the third season of Scooby Doo), and it's this character design (which is based on the original strips) that Hannah Barbera follow here (and is a marked departure from their own animated style).

For those curious, the show is pretty hilarious. There are some differences from the TV series (particulary in the actor who voices Gomez), and some similarities (Jackie Coogan reprises his role as Fester for the first season). Mainly, the animated series is even weirder! It's able to include some of the bizarre beasties and ghoulish anomalies that a '60s TV show just couldn't because of the limitations of the format at that time. So you get creatures like their pet octopus (amongst a menagerie of wild things that inhabit their home), kooky spells, and their uniquely-designed Addam's trailer home!

All in all, great stuff! If you loved the original strips and/or the TV series, your collection just isn't complete without the animated series.

The only real down-side to this set is the lack of any special features. That IS typical for Warner Bros. "movies-on-demand" model, so I wasn't surprised. But it would've been nice to get interviews with the creators, as well as any living voice actors. Ah well. At least it's available. The Scooby-Doo debut also isn't included, which is a shame, as it's also not included in the very truncated New Scooby Doo Movies set (which is missing quite a few episodes), but if you check out ioffer.com, you should be able to find it with a complete version of the latter.

Comments about Addams Family, The (ANIMATED) (DVD):

This is a wonderful show, and a great continuation of the prime-time series. "The Addams Family" actually got their animated start on an episode of "The New Scooby Doo Movies" the year before (1972) on CBS (which, strangely, was NOT included on WB's "Best of" DVD). Original series stars John Astin, Carolyn Jones, Jackie Coogan and Ted Cassidy voiced Gomez, Morticia, Fester and Lurch on Scooby's episode. For this NBC series Coogan and Cassidy returned for more horrible fun. The Addams are traveling the country in their haunted camper and the stories are quite entertaining for adults and their kids to watch together. Listen closely and you'll hear a young Jodie Foster voicing Pugsley. Great theme song by Hoyt Curtin, and the character designs closely resemble the original Charles Addams art. Definitely worth the buy. Many thanks to WB for releasing the HB library!!

Comments about Addams Family, The (ANIMATED) (DVD):

This first animated version of The Addams Family is the story of their cross country vacation trip in an antique motor home that looks like a miniature version of their house. The writing is cleverly done by writers well versed in the subject matter. It is enjoyable to see the characters visually as depicted by Charles Addams, rather than live actors for a change. This was also made into a Gold key comic book, the only time they have been a comic book.

Comments about Addams Family, The (ANIMATED) (DVD):

Nicely packaged, no frills offering of the old Hanna Barbera Saturday Morning cartoon series, where the Addams drive around the country in a car that looks like the old TV house (or the Creepy Coupe from WACKY RACES), visiting famous places. The animation is very primitive- almost comical, but has charm to it. I'm sure this was close to the end of the era of the handpainted and drawn animation cel. The humor is juvenile and a little dry, but this is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Voices: Gomez sounds like Jackie Gleason doing Reginald Van Gleason (or Johnny Carson doing Gleason), and the gal doing Morticia is an acceptable Carolyn Jones substitute. A pleasant surprise is Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester and Ted Cassidy reprising Lurch. The surprise of series- a teenage Jody Foster does the voice of Pugsley! (You will not recognize her). All in all, nice transfers and alot of corny fun. Glad to add this to the library.
