When I was very young, I owned a Chestnut thoroughbred which I sold when I entered the service. Rex ended up in a stable on Doheny Drive where Clark Gable saw him and picked him for his mount in Across the Wide Missiouri.

For years I tried to find this movie and - finally -got from WB

Rex probably died 50 years ago but, for me, he's still alive.

Clark Gable is one of the classic actors of all time. He had a way of convying a story which was engaging and entertaining.

Fascinating look at the world of the mountain men, shot in spectacular locations, but slow and ponderous at times, with a narrative that never gains much momentum. For Western movie buffs only, I suspect.

This movie is commonly under rated by movie critics but it was directed by the great action director William Wellman and has beautifully color filmed western locations. Unlike most westerns this movie is actually about the mountain men who trapped and hunted in the Rocky Mountains long before marshall Dillon ever made the scene. It made me realize how few films actually deal with that subject and this film does a good job telling about the lives of these men but also spins a darn good action packed story besides.

I reluctantly ordered this worried that it might not live up to my expectations. It is an extraordinary film, very touching, great character development and detail. Not your normal "cowboy" western. There is a great sense of place. Technically it is one of the most beautifully controlled examaples of outdoor photography I've seen in years. It was photographed in three strip Technicolor with much of the additional photography done using Technicolor's Monopack process which later became known as Kodachrome. I highly recommend this example of director, William Wellman's character driven films. All of the characters are relevant and help to drive the story. Don't think twice about ordering it.
