First saw parts of the movie on TCM. Had to buy the movie once I found out the title. Very entertaining - Don't know, however, how accurate the story is, but it is definitely an interesting story.

Historically engaging, used real locations and footage. Actors' portrayal of characters was true to the historical individuals. Actual photos of Enola Gay crew and real footage of the first atomic bomb blast.

      Comments about Above and Beyond:

I collect war movies and historical dramas. I have an old VHS copy of the movie and was looking for a replacement. Above and Beyond is the story of Paul Tibbets, who led the Silverplate B-29 project, which dropped the A Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The backstory of his relationship with his wife may be a 50's style story about a wife who doesn't understand her husband's work and the husband's inability and frustration in not being able to share what he is feeling because of the secrecy of the project. Two later films, "A Gathering of Eagles" ,and "Strategic Air Command" deal with similar subjects, along a similar line. The film is not spectacular but there are only a handful which deal with the subject, most notably "Hiroshima", a film about Truman, the bomb, the moral issues behind dropping the bombs, and Japan's surrender; and "Fat man, Little Boy" with Paul Newman which deals with General Groves and producing/developing the bombs. This is the only one to cover Tibbets and his wife, which I have seen. The story line could have been better, but it is constrained by the times. A remake would have made Robert Taylor's character less general like and more human, more flawed. Tibbets avoided all the attention after the war and his later story would have been as intersting as the wartime one, since he left the wife depicted in the movie, and later remarried. Three stars, recommended for the war/history buff.
