Finally Warner has released one of thier buried treasures. This long awaited Comedy Classic has finally been Remastered and released. Making it's debut to DVD, this A&C film is one of two Warner films that they filmed in color, making this an extra special treat. See Charles Laughton play Captain Kidd like you've never seen him play the role before. Add this Comedy Classic to your collection of DVD Treasures. It's a must have for you A&C fans.

Although not one of their funnier movies it's good to see the boy's in color.

I have never seen the film look and sound so good. A great improvement over the prints that have been in circulation for the past four decades.

Comments about Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd:

This movie brings back so many great times of my youth and I am not the only one.
The older generation remember the Saturday matinees, the serials and the cartoons. It is a pity that us Aussies cannot get this movie because WDshop hasn't a licence to sell to overseas buyers.

Comments about Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd:

Often ranked as one of the worst Abbott and Costello films I found this to be an absolute delight. Not quite as good as their 1940 films this ranks as one of the best from the 50s.

Abbott and Costello are in fine form, although Bud sometimes doesn't have much to do, it's Charles Laughton who steals the movie. He is a riot and has wonderful chemistry with Lou.

Even the songs and musical numbers aren't bad. Most of Abbott and Costello films literally stop so someone can sing a song but here they advance the plot.

Kids should enjoy this one as well as it has the feel of a Disney movie.

Abbott and Costello: B, Charles Laughton: A+, Everything else: B, Over all: B+

I've been waiting for A&C Meet Captain Kidd to be available on home video.Given that this is a remaster, not a restoration, the quality is pretty good, ie the best yet.

Comments about Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd:

What a delightful surprise! I have not seen this film for over 25 years. I remember it screened on some L.A. channel. It was a faded color print full of the usual commercial breaks etc. Now, Warner Archive has released an almost pristine version. Bright, crisp color and clear sound. Charles Laughton is a Hoot and really camps it up. The chemistry between he and Lou Costello is very evident. Most of the songs are o.k. except something about a pine tree, that makes you want to fast forward quickly. Tried and true routines and the forever lovely Hillary Brooke.

Comments about Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd:

Abbott & Costello sail the high-seas in this rollicking adventure comedy which pre-dates "Pirates Of The Caribbean" by 50 years. The "running gag" is: "Who's got the treasure map?" A&C are "invited" aboard pirate ship manned by Capt. Kidd (outrageously played by the great Charles Laughton) and Capt. Bonny (lucious Hillary Brooke) to help them find the treasure buried on skull island. Along the way, they all find music, romance and adventure. All of this shot in "SuperCineColor" by Cinematographer Stanley Cortez (!) who would alternate between such films as "The Magnificent Ambersons" and "Night Of The Hunter" (directed by Charles Laughton) to "Dinosaurus!" and "The Ghost In The Invisible Bikini." Set to a rousing musical score by Raoul Kraushaar "Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd" is fun for children of all ages. Of note is that one year after "A&C Meet..." stars Hillary Brooke and Leif Erickson (who plays "Morgan the pirate") were teamed together again as the possessed "All American Mom & Dad" in the terrifying "Invaders From Mars."
