All his life he trained to be a cantor, but now Jerry Golding has other ideas. He wants to see his name up in lights on Broadway! Danny Thomas, star classic TV comedy series Make Room for Daddy, plays Jerry in this 1952 update of the 1927 movie landmark that introduced the Sound Era. Opposite Thomas is musical legend Peggy Lee. Both Thomas and Lee rarely appear in films, which makes this heart-tugging show business story even more exceptional. Exceptional, too, are performances of song standards like Birth of the Blues, If I Could Be with You and I’m Looking over a Four-Leaf Clover. (Ray Heindorf and Max Steiner shared an Oscar® nomination for Best Musical Scoring). Watch Lee wrap Cole Porter’s Just One of Those Things in vocal silk and smoke and then set Rodgers and Hart’s Lover ablaze and you’ll know more than one jazz singer graces The Jazz Singer.

Was happy to see it finally out in DVD...have loved this movie for many years.
Comments about Jazz Singer, The (1953) (DVD):
Bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife, who had seen it and liked it a lot. I'd never seen it and wanted to, never having had the opportunity before.
Technically looked crisp, but color seemed unstable in many scenes, with slight fluctuations in tone. In sickbed scene near the end, it seemed as if the negative, or one of the color negs, was warped, as the picture shifted noticeably. Could certainly use a restoration/remastering.
As for the movie itself, in terms of musical numbers, it plays more like a vehicle for Peggy Lee than Danny Thomas.
Comments about Jazz Singer, The (1953) (DVD):
GREAT TO SEE DANNY THOMAS ENTERTAIN. THIS AND ONE OTHER ONLY MOVIES HE MADE. REST OF HIS CAREER ON T.V.
ALSO, RARE MOVIE APPEARANCE OF PEGGY LEE. SHE WAS A GREAT JAZZ ARTIST AND BEAUTIFUL.
Comments about Jazz Singer, The (1953) (DVD):
As a long time fan of Peggy Lee I was happily surprised that "The Jazz Singer" was finally released on dvd. The film, while admittedly dated, does really showcase Peggy's talent, as well as those of her co-star, Danny Thomas. The high quality of the dvd made it seem like I was seeing it on the movie screen at the local theater in 1953...no even better!
Comments about Jazz Singer, The (1953) (DVD):
It was a fun musical, with good acting. One thing to recommend this film is if you are a Danny Thomas fan, like I am, you get a few of Danny's old night club routines. Another plus is Peggy lee, her acting is good and her singing is wonderful.
