Five travelers sweat it out at gunpoint in an abandoned mining town in the Nevada desert. A killer escaped from the pen holds them, intending to scram after a doc tends to his wounded accomplice. Like The Petrified Forest and Key Largo, Split Second’s tale of captives and captors lets the sweat drip, the tension build, the dialogue zing and when the occasion calls, the fists and bullets fly. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking: the mining town is practically ground zero for an A-bomb test slated to unleash its mushroom cloud in just a few hours. Musical-star-turned-film-noir-hero Dick Powell makes his taut and tough directorial debut, guiding Stephen McNally, Alexis Smith and Jan Sterling in this split-second suspense thriller.

Comments about Split Second (1952) (DVD):
Shamefully neglected A-bomb era noir thriller directed by the great Dick Powell and starring Stephen McNally as a mad dog killer with the ultra-sexy Jan Sterling and Alexis Smith providing the eye-candy. Additional cast members include Richard Egan, Arthur Hunnicutt, Keith Andes, and Paul Kelly
I've waited for this 1953 RKO classic to come out on DVD for years.
Thanks, Warner!

Comments about Split Second (1952) (DVD):
I've wanted this movie for sometime and to find Warner Brothers Archive films was great. The sad thing about tv these days is they hardly show old good movies. I grew up on old b&w films, both the A listers and B films. Films like Split Second can get lost in the sheer number of films. I decided to give myself a present for my birthday, and this is exactly what I wanted.
Split Second is one of those gems that stands the test of time. A character driven thriller that everyone can identify with. What would you do if you were held at gunpoint by a trio of ruthless cons?
Comments about Split Second (1952) (DVD):
I remembered this movie from my youth, and I was just as taken in by it this time as when I first saw it! Great actors, storyline. Strangely, it wouldn't play on my Govideo player, so I'm pleased it would play on my MAC computer's IDVD!

Comments about Split Second (1952) (DVD):
Split Second is predictable and uneven in pace. This is an oldie moldie which reminded me of Twilight Zone episodes with a similar theme. While the characters seemed wooden and their dialoge stilted, it's always fun to watch Arthur Hunicutt in his stereotypical role. He's distinctive in the same vein as Jack Elam and Terry Thomas. All in all, Split Second is worth a look ... just don't expect more than it delivers.

I've been waiting for this little gem to come out on DVD since I first saw it on TCM ages ago. I have a much used, worn-out VHS copy of it that has made the rounds from friend to friend and finally, FINALLY it's getting the first class treatment it deserves!
A taut thriller, that just builds and builds to an exciting climax! If you haven't experienced this , you're in for a treat! Enjoy1
