Glad I also have this holiday movie at last!

I was only 15 years old when ABC first aired "The Gathering" in December 1977; I remembered reading an article about the film in the Detroit News and that spurred me into checking out this TV movie.

The performances were nothing short of excellent!

Edward Asner and Maureen Stapleton certainly had great chemistry together, and it was also interesting to see such future stars as Veronica Hamel and Gregory Harrison in one of their earlier roles (Rebecca Balding, who played Julie Thornton, was working concurrently with Asner on his series "Lou Grant").

It's not hard to see why "The Gathering" won the Emmy Award for the Best Dramatic Special of 1977. It *was* somewhat surprising to discover Hanna-Barbera produced this film (as well as Part II), but they quickly became adept at producing quality films like this one for older audiences along with their cartoons and live-action shows for youngsters. (Now I'm curious to see what H-B's take on "Belle Starr" with Elizabeth Montgomery is like; I *never* saw "Belle Starr" when CBS first aired it in 1980.)

All in all, both "Gathering" films bought back many great memories of my "wonder years" (the *only* debit: "The Gathering, Part II" *could* - and *should* - have also been digitally remestered!). Before, I had a VHS tape I recorded off TV - I couldn't even locate a commercially produced copy of "The Gathering" on VHS after said tape I recorded from TV broke - but now that problem has been *permanently* rectified. And, to be sure, I'll be watching both "Gathering" films again next Christmas season!

I've been waiting for years to see this film again. I remember when it originally aired and the 3 or 4 times it rerunned. Then it dissappeared. I think i saw it once about 5 years ago. I was exactly the same as I remember it. The story was still exciting to watch after all these years. And with the sequel also included in the purchase (the reason it got a 4 and not a 5) I sat and had Christmas in October. On the down side, I guess that I was expecting a little clear picture picture. (It looks like it was taken from a VHS tape and not cleared.) Also one of the scenes freezes and then goes to the next. But all in all I loved it and recommend it.

This Remastered DVD from the original made for TV Movie is of exceptional quality. This has always been a great Christmas TV Movie Classic and I'm glad to have found it reproduced on DVD.
