Synopsis:

From waitress to Broadway star! In her first of only three films, 1920s Broadway sensation Marilyn Miller recreates one of her greatest stage hits in Sally, a lavish, heart-on-its-sleeve Cinderella story (punctuated with some color sequences) that showcases Miller’s beauty and lyrical dancing. Also featured: Jerome Kern and Buddy De Sylva’s Look for the Silver Lining, the evergreen so associated with Miller that it became the title of her 1949 biopic starring June Haver. Haver wasn’t the only Hollywood notable to play Miller. Judy Garland took the role in 1946’s Till the Clouds Roll By, giving her own standout interpretation of three Kern standards introduced in Miller shows: Who?, Sunny and of course, Look for the Silver Lining.

Comments about Sally (1929) (DVD):

This is a GREAT early film that should appeal to any movie lover. There's comedy and romance with a few musical numbers thrown in. Unlike other musicals of it's time, there is quite a good story here!

I'm so thankful that the Warner Archive has released this rare VITAPHONE film. It is rarely shown on television, and the laserdisc has been out of print for years. I happened to catch this many years ago on TCM and searched for a copy for years. I finally found someone who had a VHS copy of the laserdisc. This DVD appears to be from the same master as the laserdisc release.

I would love to see this film more restored - but the cost of such an undertaking is substantial. It looks very good for a Vitaphone film and we should be grateful it has survived in as good a condition that it has. It looked pretty good on my 42" LCD television for a film released in 1929!!!

Comments about Sally (1929) (DVD):

Unlike the other revue-style musicals from this period, SALLY is actually a decent film and still entertains. Though virtually forgotten now, Broadway star Marilyn Miller is quite beguiling in the leading role she made famous, without all the "mugging" that usually hampers many early sound performances. She gets to sing her great "Look For The Silver Lining" as well.

Audio/video quality is good for an 80 year old film, and its not like there are mint copies lying around. There's a lovely (if grainy) restored Technicolor sequence that pops up quite suddenly in this movie, the kind of stuff real film buffs live for. Thanks, Warner, for releasing this!
