Synopsis:

Batten down the hatches and fluff up the pillows! Grif and Jenny Henderson are sailing for Europe – and bound for marital mayhem. With their expected comic precision, James Garner and Debbie Reynolds play the Hendersons in a spirited romp from three masters of laughter on home and movie house screens: writer-producers Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson and director Jerry Paris. The Hendersons are a loving, All-American couple who try to bridge the generation gap with their free-spirited son on a trip abroad. But once on the continent, family relations run aground when some teenage girls enter the picture – and a scheming French playboy (Maurice Ronet) focuses his roving eye on Jenny. Frisky business and misunderstandings galore ensue, all funny, vibrant and charming. That’s How Sweet It Is!

Comments about How Sweet It Is! (DVD):

I love classic movies. This one has Jame Garner and Debbie Reynolds, young and good-looking! But that didn't save this one. The script is just weak on this one. It could have been so much better. Two great actors and it fizzles. I hate to say it but I was disappointed. I really expected to like this one. Its so mediocre. Worth one view only!

Comments about How Sweet It Is! (DVD):

This is one of the worst Warner Archives releases, yet it is perversely interesting if not exactly entertaining. It's 1968 and sitcom director Jerry Paris and future sitcom guru screenwriter Gary Marshall present an utterly tone-deaf representation of the youth culture and the parents who strain to fit in. Garner is typically first-rate but his comic stylings are hampered by the poor material, and Debbie Reynolds is fun and fetching despite the somewhat embarrassing wife-as-sexpot role she's stuffed into (like the bikini she wears for most of the last half hour). What's fascinating is the awful Jimmy Webb songs (yeah yeah yeah), the several psychedelic sequences (though no drugs are involved), the painful sex comedy (a married couple can't get alone to have sex). We begin with Garner telling his son to get a haircut, and end with a more enlightened Garner wearing a peace symbol, running in slow motion on the beach. The final-act sequence in an Italian house of ill repute is one of those Mad Mad Mad Mad World-inspired fights/chases, though no one has any reason to be fighting or chasing. Can a comedy be unintentionally hilarious? This one is. But it's instructive to see how badly Hollywood was dealing with changing times.

Comments about How Sweet It Is! (DVD):

I had somehow missed this great 60's comedy through the years and was glad when it became available in the Warner Archive collection. Needless to say, I LOVED IT! From the incredibly "catchy" opening song and "groovy" credits, I was laughing out loud and smiling through the entire film. Debbie Reynolds had great comic timing, as did James Garner. The supporting cast were excellent in their cameo appearances. What a FUN way to spend the afternoon following all their comical situations! The transfer of the dvd is clear and crisp. Very pleased with yet another excellent Warner Archive selection! How Sweet It Is!

James Garner is great (as usual) as the confused husband. This time he thinks his wife (Debbie Rynolds) has been cheating on him for 15 years! This film also has early appearances by Erin Moran and Penny Marshall.

Comments about How Sweet It Is! (DVD):

One of my favorite guilty pleasures. I recall enjoying this movie when it was originally released in 1968. I have been waiting for nearly 10 years for a DVD release of this movie.

This movie is a very enjoyable movie. James Garner and Debbie Reynolds make a very believable married couple. Paul Lynde steals every scene he is in as the ship's purser.

The video transfer is excellent. There are no extras, but I was thrilled to get this movie on DVD.

Comments about How Sweet It Is! (DVD):

A wonderfully trashy sex comedy from the 60's, starring two genuinely great comic talents: Reynolds and Garner. It's directed with cheesy aplomb by Jerry Paris, TV-star and director of another mod, trash classic in the archive colllection, THE GRASSHOPPER. Unsophisticated is the word for this comedy, but it's still fun, thanks to some genuinely hilarious banter by the adult talent on hand (including the great French actor, Maurice Ronet, and the uniquely whiney Paul Lynde). The references to the peace-and-love generation are silly, but the dated chic is still charming. Jim Webb wrote a couple of hip songs, and there's a slick underscore from composer Pat Williams. The print is nicely preserved Panavision scope, with an overtly-equalized monaural soundtrack that requires THX or cinema EQ.
