“Any fool can steal. I’ve been embezzling.” The con is on in Hot Millions, a droll caper whose wit and warmth recall the Ealing Studios romps of the 1950s. Peter Ustinov heads an engaging cast and co-scripts the Oscar-nominated screenplay about a dapper rogue (Ustinov) who uses a corporation’s mainframe computer to issue checks to bogus companies, then proceeds to cash the checks. While he’s stealing (sorry, embezzling) millions, delightful Maggie Smith nearly steals the show as a featherheaded secretary. Karl Malden as a pill-gobbling CEO and Bob Newhart, he of the button-down mind, add to the affable fun. “When it was over, I realized that I’d been smiling for two hours” (Stanley Kauffmann, The New Republic).

"Hot Millions" is a very funny and entertaining film with fine performances by Peter Ustinov, Karl Malden, Bob Newhart, and especially Maggie Smith. This is a most amusing movie that is appropriate for all ages.

Peter Ustinov was one of the great character actors. On the rare occasions like this one where he could not only take the lead, but do the writing, he created a masterpiece. Maggie Smith is the perfect love interest and makes their relationship entirely believable. The wry wit, the political and corporate jibes are subtle and perfectly on target. And Ustinov's look of ecstasy when Maggie begins to play the flute is absolutely enchanting. It is a thrill to have this classic available again.

This is a wonderful film, with engaging performances by the always-great Peter Ustinov and Maggie Smith, funny lines, situations and twists, and a great, rousing musical score to boot! Even though the computer equipment is antiquated by today's standards, the story and performances more than make up for it, and all you have to do is think of it as what it is: a period peice, and the problem just goes away!
