Synopsis:

George Segal, Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Morley top the bill of fare in this food- and fun-filled mystery garnished with wit. Segal plays a glib fast-food tycoon and Bisset is his ex-wife, a pastry chef who may become the last course in an enigmatic killer’s banquet of death. Morley has a tasty field day as an acerbic gourmet magazine publisher whose cascading series of chins and stomachs bear witness to his love of fine dining. But the mogul’s doctors have ordered him to give up his favorite dishes – and one by one the chefs who create those dishes are slain in the manner of their specialties. Phillipe Noiret, Jean-Pierre Cassel and Jean Rochefort give delicious support, as does a mouth-watering array of wild mushrooms, plump pigeons, shiny artichokes, rich chocolate and more gastronimical delights. Dig in!

My wife wanted to see this and we couldn't find it at our usual sources, so I HAD to buy it. I remember liking it years ago, and I was not disappointed. Morley has always been one of my favorite character actors.

Comments about Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe (DVD):

I had not seen this film since its first release and watching it now 32 years later in a world bombarded with more cooking reality shows then you can shake wooden spoons at makes me appreciate it much more. Director Ted Kotcheff merges a great international cast of familiar faces and peppers them throughout the proceedings in grand fashion seasoning them in three major European cities contained in their best restaurants and hotels. Venerable Brit Robert Morley steals the show as Max the food critic who is five minutes away from perishing from eating too many rich dishes over his career. After publishing an article on the best chefs in the world cooking the ultimate four course dinner, they start getting bumped off in grisly ways. Enter George Segal and his ex-wife played by Jacqueline Bisset into the mix and you have an enjoyable romp across Europe one step away at having the killer find them. The film should have a better reputation but its possible its balance of black comedy and serious murders didn't mix with audiences at the time. Now in the age of Food channels and Food competitions, this film is just ready to be rediscovered. Warner Archive has released a beautiful transfer in its 1.85 aspect ratio inserting the viewer into the stunning European locales of Venice and Paris. For those who love a good mystery mixed with some slapstick farce, look no further and enjoy this great time capsule but just a word of warning, you may want to indulge in a major dining experience after the viewing.

Comments about Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe (DVD):

I just really enjoy this movie.
My version is full screen and I like it that way.
This movie looks like they copied it straight from a vhs tape. The pic quality is good, but not great.
Also more evidence that it is a straight
vhs copy is that there is no menue. You
go straight to the Warner Bros logo and then into the movie.
