Oscar-nominee Robert Ryan ("The Wild Bunch," "Crossfire") plays Captain Nemo, the infamous submarine captain. The Captain rescues six shipwreck survivors and brings them to his underwater fortress, where they may be trapped for the rest of their lives. Nanette Newman ("The Wrong Box") and Chuck Connors ("Soylent Green," "Old Yeller") co-star in this fantasy-adventure. Enjoyable for the entire family. Directed by Oscar-winner James Hill.

Comments about Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (DVD):
I saw this movie when it first came on TV and now over joyed that it is part of my collection of DVD's. My 7 years old grandson watched and he loved the underwater scenes. The stoy line has a cetain appeal to somepeople and not to others. The story line to me is people will find a way to wage war and the oceans should be a place where there should be no war and a place of peace, you know a kind of safe harbor for those of us who believe that we should learn to live togeather and not wage war at a drop of a hat live we do today.

Great to see a film from my childhood.
Comments about Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (DVD):
This was one of the "Saturday matinee" movies of my youth. I loved the Disney 2000 Leagues under the Sea so I loved this one. I showed it to my young daughter who thought it was OK but slow moving and with a cheaply done monster stingray.
This is a perfect choice for the Warner Archive series.

I am a movie collector (own 968 DVD's) most of which are collector's editions. I have been searching for this particular movie for 15 years, believe it or not. It's that good! Its a family movie worth watching over and over. I highly recommend it.

Comments about Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (DVD):
I saw this originally on TV many years ago and remembered it, but I hadn't seen it since then. I purchased this Warner version as soon as it came out and I am very pleased with the movie.
The transfer of the movie itself is quite clean. The only detraction is the poor opening blue background scene that goes on for a couple minutes. It is a poor opening impression to the movie. If this is your first time seeing the movie, I'd recommend you skip that and just start with the movie itself.
For those unfamiliar with the movie, Nemo has built an underwater city, has 2 submarines, and has withdrawn from the world along with several hundred other people. Unlike the Disney version, this one makes no references to that movie and is independent of it. Likewise, this Nemo doesn't go around sinking ships, but instead rescues people drowning in the ocean.
Most of the remaining cast were rescued in the opening of the movie, and we follow their story and their interactions with Nemo and a few of his senior staff/workers.
The inside scenes of the submarines are quite good. The outside shots of the submarines are a little disappointing, but still engaging. The inside scenes in the underwater city are good, but some of the underwater scuba scenes are muted.
Overall, this is a good picture and the conflicts/struggles between the cast members are believable. I enjoyed seeing it again, and my 4 year old son liked seeing it also.

Comments about Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (DVD):
Used to satisfy nostalgic urges; say it as a kid and enjoyed it. At bit one-dimensionaly & juvenile but I would still recommend it to SciFi fans.

Comments about Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (DVD):
It's a fanciful, mid-century sci-fi from MGM's British division, featuring Robert Ryan doing a nice stint as Jule Verne's famous Nautilus Captain - less sociopathic than usual. The production design has an imaginative, Victorian flair, as does the evocative score by Angela Morley (aka Wally Stott). Old-fashioned kid's stuff but charmingly nostalgic.
